Fantastic sound and features in a small unit
Daniel 5089, 29.09.2014
In short, the Studio Electronics Boomstar delivers a fantastic, vintage-like tone and very well thought out features. No hidden features, no menus, no presets, just tweaking direct on the panel, and a big, bold, wonderful sound. If you are in the market for a fantastic sounding analogue synthesizer, the Boomstar delivers.

Analog bead Boomstar 5089
I use the device exclusively in the studio. The processing of the case is valuable and solid. The potentiometers sit tight on the housing and have a pleasant rotating resistance. Contrary to the model shown here, my 5089 other pot, (Similar to the Moog Mintaur, only smaller) which I personally like better. The small knobs below now have a white position mark. As a result, the value settings are clearly better known. The distribution of the potentiometers and switches is generous and practical. No fiddling and you do not inadvertently touch other buttons. Very beautiful. Only the small regulator row below, requires a little more sensitivity. This does not constitute a problem in any way.
I find the hammer-hammering varnish somewhat unfavorable. In the case of direct lighting, it reflects very irregularly and the marking becomes difficult to read. Indirect lighting is the solution.
All functions are directly accessible. There are no hidden levels. What may be a shortcoming for many: There is no way to store presets. Controller movements are not possible Record and are not Midi CC automatable. This is due, among other things, to the discreetly analogous structure and ultimately consistent. The following parameters are "Midified": Pitchbendwheel is assigned to the continuously adjustable pitchbend potentiometer. -The Modulationwheel is fixed to the LFO modulation depht. -Keyboardvelocity is assigned to the envelope depht. The Velocity strength is infinitely adjustable. -Aftertouch is assigned to the filter corner frequency. -The LFO is Midiclock sync enabled.
The sound of the synth is, despite the 4 pole Lopass ladder filter, which is based on Moog, completely independent. The functions and interconnections are well thought-out. A very wide sound palette with a wide range of waveforms is possible. I like this synth very well. Above all, the professional and lively sound quality. It was a long time ago that a sound engineer loved me so much. This part is currently my number 1 and every cent of the slightly high purchase price worth. Quality has, as always, simply their price.
