The perfect "sofa" - also suitable for the stage

Tone Hunter, 31.08.2012
I already had some headless basses, including several "real" Steinberger of different types (80s and 90s, graphite) and also several "cheap copies", eg from Hohner. After playing for some time only "normal" basses, I finally wanted to be able to practice comfortably and relaxed at home on the sofa.

Condition on delivery:
The bass came very well packed with me. I have tuned the strings and the first experience was: the bass is not playable. The strings lay, almost right on the fingerboard, in the right mood. Even with the slightest touch, no sound was heard without noises. This has not frightened me because I know how to set a bass properly. A beginner should have sent the part back. Otherwise, there was absolutely nothing to complain about.

Sound:
The sound is quite flexible. Deep, deep, the part can grow properly, the heights are clear, but perhaps something "boring", at least in part surely the cheap are to blame.
The sound is therefore very healthy, but the bass has no "character tone". In the Bandound I have felt so far however almost always as rather positive, the sound is comparatively "neutral".
The XT-25 sounds by the way much better than all 4-string counterparts. Probably lies at the voluminous neck of the XT-25, but sound is obviously also taste. Someone else may feel different.

If I had to call a comparison, I would choose a Rickenbacker. The XT also has a continuous neck, through the humbucker also a bit "compressed" tone and sustain to overmoke.
A bass from Uncle Leo sounds already completely different by the construction.

Ergonomics:
For playing on the sofa, the leg support is too far right for my taste, I have moved you about 4.5 cm to the left. In order for the folding mechanism to work, you also have to add a small recess. Now the bass is absolutely balanced on the thigh.

The string spacing is quite small, in the range of the 5-string the XT belongs to those with a small string spacing. If you already play a 5-string, it should go. Who wants to switch from the 4-string and slaps, will have problems with it. Fingers and plectrum players should have no problems, perhaps even advantages.

The neck is, as with all the Steinbergern, quite voluminous. I think this is good, because you have something right in the hand.

Playing this bass on the harness is quite needed. Due to the fact that the left belt button sits approximately at the height of the 21st (!), This bass has a completely different position in front of the body than usual. The neck is much further to the left and you have to stretch your left arm to get to the deep locations. This can be quite exhausting.
I decided after a few weeks to reinstall my earlier solution. One takes: a 10mm Alustange, ca 18cm long, and drill a hole at the upper "horn" in the corpus. Parallel to the neck and at a slight angle upwards. Then cut a thread for the screw to receive the belt button into the aluminum rod. Fuse the part so that it protrudes approximately 12 to 14 cm from the cop. Screw on the belt pin, shrink it over a shrink tube and finish. So far I have been asked only about the shape of the bass, never on belt fastening. The is apparently considered "original", does not fall on and it works perfectly. My belt pin is now between the 14th and 15th position and this is very easy to play. And after switching to a different bass, you do not always have to be there.

The resonability of the bridge is always criticized. This bridge looks like the one from my XQ5 from the 90's, but is from other material. The "original" bridge was made of solid brass and was evenly and very finely tuned. The bridge on the XT is cast and has a voice play. It takes just a little longer, until perfect is done. Often you do not have this bass anyway. As for the D-string: this string is definitely more difficult than any other, which was on all my Steinbergers so, why I do not know.

My specimen weighs exactly 3.38 kg.

Something a pity I find that the new pickups of the form not like EMG 35 or EMG 40 built. This makes it no longer easy to replace the pickups with others. But it is possible. However, these pickups sound much better than the ones previously used.

With the string adapter I will soon test other strings, I am convinced that there is still a lot of potential dormant.

Sensational price / performance ratio - after initial quirks

Rainer534, 24.05.2012
The luthier of mine trusted unasked that the sound is sensationally good and covers all desired areas - I can only agree completely. Him like me was surprised how much weight the part brings on the scale. Sure good for the sound, but not really a tour guide like I had hoped. Interesting details: two rear belt pins, which allow very different wearing positions and thus also a different feeling, especially with full body use. Smart: the fold-out legrest for playing while sitting.
Unlike any other reviewer, neither I nor my luthier find the tension screws for the strings stiff.
The supplied Gigbag does its job, but is not well fitting and only slightly padded. there are far better enclosed original Gigbags - but also for a higher total price.

Macke in the beginning (hence the way to the luthier): Just as the part was delivered, it was not recordable: Bundschnarren without end. Reason: Bridge had to be readjusted and some frets were edited. I know from experience: it would have been no problem to send the bass back to the Thomannans and then get it back to its fully functional condition at no extra cost. But I was just too impatient and just did not want to wait a few days - Therefore, this flaw should really be overvalued under any circumstances, especially since they probably does not occur more often. (I have never heard / read about it before). By the way, to fix such quirks you do not really need a luthier, but only a little basic knowledge (which I would have) and a little patience (which I do not have).

addendum:
Warning!!
To really experience the qualities of a 5-string, you need a sufficiently good system that is above the cost of this bass.
