I am just a musician, do not have to do anything with music and do not play a musical instrument. So here I am only a 'layman' and far away from a professional.

I can only trust my hearing and my experiences.

All I can say about the Shure 1840 is that the musical reproductions of this headphone simply excite me. I have never heard of such a neutral and authentic reproduction in the course of 35 years. Not at Sennheiser, AKG, Beyer or Stax.

The only downside of this handset is the fact that it is made in China and not in the USA. For the called price I would have expected the latter.

This will not be a detailed review, as this headphone has a feature that makes all other evaluation criteria superfluous for me.

Throughout the bass frequency range <300 Hz, this headphone causes strong distortions. I'm not talking about nonlinear frequency response through boosts but very obvious "distortion". A simple sine wave does not sound like a sine wave here, but has very noticeable overtones that may not be present.

The effect is so strong that I clearly assumed a defect in the first device and requested a replacement. I was amazed when the second device had exactly the same problem. That both headphones were broken in the same way is very unlikely.

This bass distortion seems to be a characteristic of the headphones. Under no circumstances should this be the case for a device of this price range sold as a reference and mastering headphone. Anyone who finds this distortion as a music consumer agreeable may be able to do something with it. But as a professional producing equipment, it completely misses its function, so only one star. The second device also went back.

Comfort is good, because the device is very light. The processing is a bit moderate for the price.
