High inspiration at low cost !
Gus Pap, 22.03.2018
I' d like to start this review by saying that this synth is really really great ! I can' t almost find a blemish on this gem !

The sounds : The sound samples are of true high pro quality. They stimulate the mind and the hands follow ! The electric piano sounds are fantastic ! So inspirational ! The piano sounds are alright. The brass, the strings and of course the organ sounds are of top quality. The rotary effect of the organ is great and the drawbars are giving lots of options !

FX section : The FX sounds are also fantastic ! I like all of them : The chorus, vibrato, tremolo, phaser, distortion etc, they all are of true high quality ! They really trigger the sounds and lead them to a whole new level of inspiration and joy ! The only negative that I find in this section, is that you can' t customize the settings of the FX such as level, rate, depth, time etc. There is just one knob that triggers all of these settings together. All the same, the FX unit of this synth sounds really great. The reverb is fantastic ! You can also choose which FX you want to apply on each sound !

The keys : The feeling of the keys is fantastic ! Not too hard, not too soft and even though it' s not a waterfall keyboard, the feeling is great and very comfortable to play. It helps you to bring out the utmost of your playbility skills !

The look : This synth looks fantastic ! It has an original vintage look and even though it is made of plastic, it doesn' t give a cheap impression whatsoever. The colour is black and white. really really great ! The quality of the materials is fair enough given the price.

The looper and drum section : This section is very easy to use and helps you create, practice and improvise at any style you want. It makes you want to play more and more ! But the duration of the loop is only 20 seconds..

The verdict : This review is based on a personal opinion and quality is in the eye of the beholder ! If you are a super pro, you might want to buy a more expensive synth such as a Nord, which can fulfill your professional expectations. But if you are a semi pro, this synth is a dream come true ! Everything is so hands on and you can easily create the sound that you want very fast, without having to dive into complex menus and make lots of actions. I also think that this synth can easily and decently perform in any true professional live, without having any problem at all. I can surely tell that the price is more than fair, if you consider the sound quality and the options that this great synth offers. I also recommend that you should buy a damper pedal, if you want to get the most out of it, especially in the piano and electric piano sounds.

So finally : This great synth is highly recommended ! It is going to inspire you and you will have a great time playing with it ! The only negative that I find, is that you can' t customize the FX settings. Everything else is really really great ! I hope that you will find this review helpfull, if you consider on buying this great synth made by Roland.

Affordable all-rounder with quirks

I use the device as a second / third party device for appearances, where it matters that you can connect without much wiring and with the least possible effort to get the music on the stage. Also in the rehearsal room, because I often leave my main unit after the performances in the theater, where we perform again and again, and it is too annoying for me to carry it away again and again.
In addition I have to say that I am a musician in a cabaret, so different than in a band with us the lyrics are in the foreground. The musical accompaniment is performed by keyboarder / guitarist / bassist and (sometimes) recorded drums. Even though we sometimes get off really horny, the heavyweight is ultimately not completely on the musical performance. Nevertheless, we try to be as perfect as possible here. -

Usually I'm on stage with a Nord Stage 2 or the newer Nord Electro 5. The small Roland Combo unit has the advantage of being able to find the same organ, piano, and synthesizer sound genres, maybe not 100% as sophisticated as the Nord instruments, but in the cabaret context it is enough, and for that you have it quickly clamped the arm and so it is ideal for gigs, where we only play a small set of 15 minutes or so instead of the usual 2 hours, because you can be much more relaxed, because the whole construction and dismantling are not so expensive. You can save as many cable layers, if you run the combo and the amplifier on battery (assuming you will still be removed via PA).
In addition, we use occasionally drum playbacks, this I always have to take a player with the Nord devices and then also need a small mixer to equalize the volume, in the Roland Combo I just push a USB stick and can "handle" all this in one device.
As I said, the sounds do not have the same quality as the Nord instruments, of course, but for me and these mentioned short appearances, that's enough. Since we often leave our instruments in the theater, where we perform several times a month, the Roland Combo is also an ideal second device for the rehearsal room in between.

Downer No. 1: It often lacks an octave, I often split the device to reproduce certain orchestral sounds can with brass and organs, etc., because then sometimes the space on the keyboard is missing ... But sponge over it. Can you arrange with us.

What annoys me as the only really (downside, no -fass No. 2) s.der device is the (typically Roland) "slippery" keyboard. I've often disconnected myself from Roland devices in the past because the weird keyboards are built into their devices. Here it is very extreme: The whole keyboard is once again totally polished, you slip with your fingers extremely on it and off, and especially the black keys are somehow additionally flattened laterally and have a semi-circular profile, I do not know who designed it! For the remedy (it is really exhausting, more difficult things because it always get on it), I've already considered, because on the black keys at least insulate tape, so you have more support or roughen the black keys with coarse sandpaper, but that could of course cause that dust from roughening gets inside and causes damage there. In the end you have to (positively think!) Always say that you can safely get a piece that you can play on the Roland combo on the Nord Stage, so accept the challenge.

In conclusion, I am quite satisfied and find the device for my purposes also extremely practical, would buy it again and again. But you should - as mentioned - always have a slightly better device in the hindquarters.
