Finally: at home everywhere!

Daniele T., 10.09.2016
I just waited and postponed for months the decision to try and buy the RME Babyface Pro, as I couldn't commit to spend the money it costs.

At the other end of my life, I use a Fireface UCX on my job, which I love in each and every detail. But I've never plugged my guitars into it, because that's job, you know, corporate realm, business land.

I was afraid the Babyface Pro was still just toy room stuff compared to the UCX, though at a price tag that still required serious (and honest) questioning within myself.

I play guitar in a noise / drone / ambient setting, and I'm heavily dependent on a tableful of digital effects (mostly Strymon and Eventide) which isn't exactly travel-friendly.

I want to start dig into Cycling74's Max and and learn how to "build" my own sound effects chain in there, explore ppooll and elevate Ableton Live from recording workbench to realtime processing tool.

All of this requires a portable front-end for guitar of unquestionable neutrality in tonal response, together with the lowest possible transport latency.

RME Babyface Pro delivers what it says on the box, and then some, too. I had to switch the routing off within TotalMix to be convinced I was hearing my through-path signal, for how negligible latency (on a 2015 MacBook Pro i7) is.

I've added a hefty psu, even if Babyface Pro works like a charm just with the USB bus, without external power, because it sounds so pristine, so transparent, so... like there isn't anything on the path, that I want to exploit all the headroom it can handle.

I find the DSP-based reverb and delay pretty usable for my training schedules at hotel rooms, and the output stage can really drive even the most current-hungry headphones of my arsenal to life, real life.

Just be warned, though, of something you may just ignore until you hold the Babyface Pro in your hands: size-wise it's tiny and compact, but weight-wise it's a brick, due to the seriously "Made in Germany" construction. It'll get into your laptop shoulder bag easily, but it will laugh at every penny you've spent for light-weight equipment.

It's pleasure to touch and operate, beside what it'll make of your most precious sound sources in audible terms, and RME are renown for the relentless work they put on refining their (already winning) drivers even further. Whoa, they promised Babyface Pro would have been a major leap from the previous hardware... and word was followed by facts.

Will buy it again

I have only a few external devices and needed replacement for the older PCI Interface 9632 HDSP, with which I was very satisfied for my concerns.

I was important in the future independent of the PCI or PCIe, which is why it was a USB interface. The latency is slightly higher but can be used all the time.

The quality of RME is still convincing and you have certainly a great product for years. Until last, there were always updates for the 9632. So over several years of well-maintained products. Top!

The speakers remained the same. The Babyface plays very clear, detailed and spatial as the 9632-card. Only the heights come "harder". This can again be the Adam A3X. Referring to FIG. I still have to work up highs. Everything else is top and I am very satisfied.

Who is familiar with the RME operation, better does not work. It certainly takes time to get used to or become accustomed, if one does not know it.

- sound for the price top, heights may be somewhat hard (to Adam A3X!). Very detailed and very spacious.
- Operation as usual top
- Quality top

The hardwareside compressor is missing from the features. EQ and Hall are usable.

Inse Totally I would buy it again
