Excellent Case, but couple of minor usage points...
As predicted by other reviews, this case turned out to be more than just a gig bag, and it provides much more protection. Compared to other gig / shoulder strap bags, it's not cheap, but in this case you get what you pay for. It's very well made, and although light, is amazingly rigid once it's all zipped up. All the straps, buckles and zips are 'industrial' strength. Loaded and on your shoulders, it feels very comfortable an secure, and doesn't slip at all. Makes walking a distance with your banjo almost a pleasure!
I had a couple of slight concerns that I worked around though.
The neck support, at least with my banjo, isn't high enough. When you close the lid zip up, the neck end of the case rises up and starts to press on the tuning pegs. I'm sure it's not pressing that hard, but I didn't like this direct contact at this very delicate end of the banjo. I really wanted to see the peg head 'floating free' in inside the case. Bear in mind that when you've got these types of bag on your shoulders, low doors are the enemy - sooner or later you'll hit the top of the bag on the top of a door frame, right where your peg head is touching.
To get around this, I use a small pad under the neck where it rests on the neck rest, and this holds the peg head clear.
My other slight concern is the same as another reviewer commented on - when you close the lid, it presses down on the skin and bridge. This does hold it very snuggly, and it's probably not pressing as much as I think, and there is suede pad at this point, so it's by design. It is, though, enough to make me not want to keep it closed up this case for long periods - but that's not what I bought it for. It does also stop me using the pocket on outside as filling this will make it this more pronounced. But that's not a great loss, find somewhere else for the beer bottle!
Overall, this case is by far the best gig bag I've had, light, well made, provides good protection. I might be being oversensitive, but just watch the two points above. If I lost it I'd get another one...
Yes, I called it a case, because it's much more than a simple gig bag.
The Reunion Blues Continental gig bag is probably the best protection you can get outside of a hard case, and it can have more shock/impact protection in some circumstances. I've got one for my Telecaster, and the guitar feels extremely safe and secure, so I was confident the banjo case variant would be similar.
This is the 'Midnight Series', or black colour in other words.
I wasn't bothered about the colour, but the black was a bit cheaper, so that made my mind up.
It's significantly larger than most gig bags in all dimensions, has a huge amount of rigid padding all the way around, has a specially designed neck block for holding the banjo in place, and has protective pads at the bridge and headstock areas.
Although this bag is larger than I required for my 11" rim openback banjo, it is constructed in a way that it holds the pot tight at the back and front, so again there is little movement once the neck is fastened to the support block. Nevertheless, a rolled up towel around the rim will serve to hold it even more snugly during transport.
The case, while not featherlight like many gig bags, is still impressively portable for its bulk. The carry handle is a work of art; feels solid in the hand, is soft yet substantial, and is positioned so that the case is beautifully balanced when carrying, distributing the weight very efficiently. The shoulder straps are tucked away in a zippered compartment, and there is a further rear compartment, two large front compartments and an additional handle near the top on the back.
The heavy duty zippers for the lid go all the way around allowing the lid to be opened fully, revealing the striking electric blue diamond padding within.
it's a stunning bag very well made, and very easy to heft about.
