Great distorted - fuzzy sound for bass

02.05.2016
I got fatrat as a fan of '80 rat sound and i was really curious how the new features (fat & mosfet) could affect the sound of my rickenbacker 4003. Well, the result is really awesome. The "fat" mode is the way to go for the bass. The "mosfet" mode makes the sound more wide and soft. though I found out that the "stock" (not "mosfet") keeps more the attack of playing. Depending of the needs i switch it to "mosfet" but i mostly play with "stock".
Also, it is remarkable (as in all rats) that with just 2 knobs and a volume knob you can make out various sounds, from clean with little dirt to real distorted and fuzzy.
A very very interesting thing is that the op amp is socketed. +1 to the open minded people of proco for adding this option. So, if desired, the replacement of the op amp with others is really easy. I did change it with the legendary lm308n and believe me it is worthy doing this. The sound with the stock op amp is really good but lm308n gave this pedal really better fuzzy low end.

The fat rat

Marvin aus K., 29.03.2017
Although I am built in 82 ', but the time of the 80s only peripherally in diapers got noticed. According to the tradition, the proco advice should have been the hype at this time. But even today? In times of amp-in-a-box pedals (Friedman, Bogner, Strymon ...)? With a C64 does not want to work today any more? After extensive research for a new distortion pedal, I came across the advice and answered this question for me with a clear YES! I have no comparison with the other versions of the rat, but the FatRat I immediately shut my heart. Original circuit plus two minor modifications, great! What inspires me is the impressive enforcement ability of the distortion (80's Guitar Hero Solos ...) with simultaneous, hmm, "transparency"? I do not want to drift into the esoteric, but somehow the council is harr and good at the same time when that makes sense? Do not misunderstand the advice "Color" the sound immensely, but it sounds in my opinion exactly how it should sound! Cutting, light, harmonious and well-toned. In this version the Council is an 18v operation possible (See website ProCo), which I however not so liked. The bass is more present and it sounds "closer", but there is also a certain "hardness" in the game which I did not like. Taste, but a big plus for the option! The two additional modes are nice to have but I have not completely stilled from the stool. Fat-fashion bringsts for low-gain sounds, the sound becomes thicker and rounder. The alternative clipping mode sounds a little organic but rather subtle, it becomes a little nicer. Here I am, however, not yet come to a final "when I need that". Will definitely come. I have also exchanged the Op-Amp and must say that the difference is quite clear. The LM308 sounds less modern (organic) but somehow also round and a bit more melt in the heights. On the subject of Amp-In-A-Box: I think you should be clear what you want, a flexible pedalboard which is independent of the amp or a pedalboard which "supplements" the character of the amp. I've chosen the latter and therefore consciously (so far) against amp-in-a-box pedals. The Council was probably built so times, but can not keep up with the modern monsters. As an independent "instrument" the Council is, in my opinion, the total bringer! Conclusion: much money for so little circuit, processing top and with optional LM308 Op-Amp everything possible from crunch to fuzz cream, but with a lot of cutting in the sound but at the same time "transparent". Perfect for me!
