Blood in the water .....

StudioDestroika, 03.11.2017
The Piranha was purchased as a Besatzpartner for a Hotone Heart Attack to spice up my home recording theme corner something .......

Since currently on offer, the decision was not difficult for the little carnivore. 99 euros for the Hotone once, then the Piranha may also taste free 99. Thought. Ordered. Delivered. (Thomann stop) .... when I did the rehearsal in the evening, I experienced my blue, or rather red, miracle:

I love the HeartAttack, but the Hotone has NO chance (!) Against the Piranha when it comes to "brutal", despite the neat Gainreserven! The tiny little Peavey smells blood and beats mercilessly !!! Where the hotone goes soft and round ("California Sound") into the gain, the Peavey becomes rude, defiant and simply aggressive. if you turn it further, the difference becomes even more blatant. What pleasantly stands out, the Peavey can do it all at a much lower volume than the Hotone, which of course is worth gold at home.

Clearly (as with all microamps) the headroom is missing, but with a corresponding poweramp stage (Peavey, 6L6, Presence & Resonance control) and the right attitude the difference (to the great ancestor) is not noticeable anymore and can be differentiated into taste nuances.

Speaking again compared to the Hotone, the Peavey is really more of a brutal, relentless street racer, with the Hotone being more of a civilian martial artist from a good family ..... the Hotone has more gain, but the Peavey uses it more directly, especially when once the turn with the "EQ" button raushat. If Hotone praises Heart Attack as a "California" sound, they are not wrong, and that's especially clear when compared to the Piranha, HeartAttack = Cali / Piranha = Redneckcountry (but at its finest).

Sound technically, everything is in there with the Piranha from Van Halen (here the Crunch Channel and an Alnico5 in the bridge), about Machine Head (without problems, of course very well with EMGs) to things like ERRA or other artists from the Home Sumerian, the thicker the strings, the lower the tone, the more comfortable the piranha feels.

The only thing I noticed a negative to me so far is the processing of the "locking mechanisms" for the Power & Crunch / Lead buttons, which wobble a bit when pushing in, but if I change the tube (JJ) eventually I'll cock the springs myself and well, everything else would be complaining at the highest level especially at the price.

All in all, the Peavey is the true end of a long journey, especially now in combination with the Hotone is sound technically really everything in there which has ever brought people to moshe, respect for this product!
I had already given up believing in Peavey as a company, but after the PR debacle several years ago, the piranha is a real step into the future: bringing SMB design combined with "old" technology like tube and paper resistors in the right places "sound" and "space saving" really once together, so it's fun too.

Pocket Amplifiers

Ced.Q, 23.11.2016
I use this amplifier virtually only on energetic music, from cool rock like Interpol to metal to the Nevermore or the Thrash of the 90'S.

- The settings ... well there is a single knob that acts as a general tone, not enough and too restrictive to my taste ... it will almost always be necessary to exploit the effect loop to obtain a convincing sound.

So, we find ourselves to walk with cables, pedals and power supply, the amp loses its side passes everywhere, and that is a shame!

The overall sounds are not bad, but especially to work at home, in group the lack of adjustments will make that we often come back to the amp to get a better sound without really found a better sound.

I played it on a HB 4X12 in V30 and a VHT fat bottom 2X12, and I never got a sound that really satisfies me, both on the channel crunch and lead.

I usually play on Engl Savage and EVH 5150 100 W, and there is no comparison with these amps, there is a huge gap between the piranha and more heads.

It is noteworthy that we get interesting results by going through a CAB roadster, one has a portable config, not too bulky and easy to transport, that is what made me buy this amp, 1Kg (. ...) and the sound of the 6505 (5150) in the pocket ... well almost ...
