Ovation 1868TX-5 Elite
18.02.2017
This guitar sounds superb. The action is nice and low and the super shallow body is very comfortable whilst practicing. Also if you like a modern understated look the textured black finish is killer. I would have no problem in recommending this guitar or Thomann service to a relative or friend.

Great guitar for the B at fair price
Earl Grey, 07.09.2016
For a few days now I am the proud owner of this beautiful Ovation guitar.

I have to say in advance that this is not my first ovation. So far, I've played a 10 year old cheaper model with OP30 preamp and mid depth bowl on stage.
Here I was disturbed by the very round body, the playing in a standing position (at least for me) not really pleasant.

Since I really like the Ovation sound, I ordered the 1868TX-5 with Super Shallow Bowl, which is much flatter.
While still standing, she still turns away from the body a lot less than the Mid Depth Bowl. With the slim design, I get along well, sitting it fits with all models anyway.

The guitar was ordered in the morning and on the following day, as always, delivered quickly and without problems. Thanks again to the Thomann team.

The 1868TX-5 was perfectly adjusted with a very good playability and string position. No glue residue, no quirks, no burrs on the frets, everything, really everything perfect! I did not expect.
The guitar is also lighter than the "thickness" due to the narrow body.
Anyone who wants can raise other strings from other manufacturers or other types. I think the wounded original strings (would have to be Adamas) are very good. Strings are clearly a matter of taste.

As expected, she has not played so deep bass and not quite as much volume as with the lower body shape, but that does not mean that there are no basses. It still sounds very balanced and round, a little quieter perhaps. Since my old model was a bit too bass heavy for me, the sound of the 1868 comes very close.
I bought the model but mainly as a stage guitar (cover band). Although I have not used it live yet, but via the OP-Pro preamp directly into my mixer (Allen & Heath ZED 16FX) fed. So I play it later live.

Now go over the preamp again the sun really. This is a sound of the finest, Ovation sound, of course, you have to love (I do), but very balanced, very round, nothing bothers and with all controls in basic setting. Of course you can now correct the sound in any direction, be it on the preamp or on the mixer. If you've missed any basses before, you can make a significant contribution here without any problems, just great.
The OP-Pro preamp sounds better than my old OP30 preamp, which is certainly true of the guitar itself.
The built-in tuner works perfectly.

To the optics:
Like so much, the black matte finish is a matter of taste, but I find it very cool. I'm glad to see her on stage with stage lighting.
There are no position inlays on the fingerboard. You have to know that, if you need them. This reduces the production costs, but also fits the cool "dark" look.
Laterally at the neck but the frets are indicated with small dots. For me that's enough to know in which position I am.
The neck itself is not painted bold but satined with a fine lacquer coating (I think that's what you call it). Since the hand does not stick to the neck, which I find very pleasant.
The neck is more like an electric guitar. This has the advantage that you can easily reach around it, but that does not mean that you can play with the 12-string bendings as with a 10-string electric guitar. The fretboard is, as with many electric guitars, a bit narrower than, say, my Taylor Westerngit.
If you need large string spacing when fingerpicking, this could possibly be a bit difficult. I also get along well with fingerpicking, as I also played an ovation before that. This too is a matter of taste and, above all, a matter of getting used to and a question of playing technique.

Incidentally, I would like to say that my old Ovation was very insensitive to feedback, which spares the nerves during the soundcheck on stage. The 1868 will probably not be different, especially since it is not as bass heavy. In my rehearsal room, I had no problems, even though I sat with the sound extinguishers in the direction of speakers. That's why I love Ovation guitars. (With my more expensive Taylor I already had more problems with feedback.

Conclusion:
Absolutely great guitar with a great preamp and a cool look.
Unbeatable value for money.
I would buy it again immediately!
