Orange Amplification #4 Terror Amplifier

This is a 15/7 watts all-tube guitar head. It could shortly be described as a rockerverb preamp in a terror chassis.

The package came in a normal Thomann cardboard box, inside of which was Orange's own cardboard box. Opening the second box you find a normal-sized terror amp, the manual and warranty papers and a handy bag in which you can easily carry the amp around.

The amp itself looks a lot like the Dark Terror, the title replaced by "#4" with Jim Root's signature underneath. Behind the amp you'll find small Slipknot and Stone Sour logos, so the signature tag does not weigh on this amp very heavily. Most people won't even notice it is a signature. It's small, weights about 7kg and is easy to haul around thanks to the bag.

The features are slightly pimped up Terror issue: On/Off and 15W/STBY/7W switches, volume, eq and gain controls, one input and three outputs(2x8 & 1x16 ohms). As with the Dark Terror, the #4 has an effects loop as well. It works as it should, without noticeably coloring your tone. Unlike the other Terror amps, the #4 doesn't have a shape control(which progressively scoops the mid when increased) but instead has a three-band EQ, which gives you more control on the tone. As with all the Terror amps excluding the Dual Terror, the #4 has only one channel, which limits the useability slightly.

The sound is what you might expect. It's pretty close to the Dark Terror, but thanks to the EQ is a tad bit more versatile. Compared to a standard Tiny Terror, you get more gain, without losing anything. The cleans are also what you might expect; troublesome. They sound good, but mostly when you're playing alone. Add a drummer to the mix, and the 15 watts just can't bring enough volume to be heard as well as with a bigger amp. But for everything else, the 15 watts are well loud enough, and you can comfortably play in a metal, as well as a classic rock, or pretty much any genre band without feeling the tone is anything but great.

Quality-wise, what's there not to like? The chassis is solid and the controls are properly installed(no wobbling). I bought this one as soon as it came out, and in that time it hasn't failed me even once. I play a lot at home and on average about 5/month in rehearsals and gigs, and despite that, I'm still happily running on the original tubes.

Overall I can't give it a perfect score for lacking the power to deliver clean tones in a performing metal band, and the fact that it has only one channel. But other than that, I'm very pleased with the #4.

When I opened the package, the amplifier made a very good impression on me.
However, I noticed that the LED did not always work and so I sent him back to Thoman.
A little later I got a new amplifier and then tested it extensively.

In advance, the amplifier is VERY robustly processed and of the size also super transport. It offers the usual adjustment possibilities and the regulators make a very stable impression (but made of plastic). The controls can be operated very finely.

I play over the amplifier a Gibson Les Paul studio.
Even if the amplifier has only one channel, it still offers a great variety of sound. When the gain control is between 7 and 12 o'clock, the volume control can be used to make clean and rocky sounds.

The amplifier can be surprisingly good clean.
From 12 o'clock the leaf turns and the amplifier shows its full potential.
However, the sound then, at least in a Les Paul, very bassy, ??whereby I use for a little more gain a distortion, so that nothing mashes.

When the gain control is set to 15 o'clock, the amplifier begins to sound noticeably, although high-gain sounds are possible even at 1 pm to 2 pm, and there is hardly any noise at all.

The 7 Watts are a bit thinner than 15 Watts, but both can easily be played to room volume (if someone is the intended) without which the sound (quality and volume) unbearable. However, you should be very careful with the volume control at 15 watts.

With almost down-regulated gain controls (7-9 o'clock), clean things are possible until about 9 o'clock in the volume control.

All in all, it is a top amplifier at a top price.
