Great sounding little pocket recorder
LutherD, 28.05.2021
I'm a field recordist. I've been using this pocket recorder for more than a year now, and I'm quite pleased with it. So much so, that I just bought a second one. I usually carry one with me all the time.

The sound quality of this recorder is really very good, especially for this price. It might be the best sounding pocket recorder on the market today.

It's also very tiny, and sturdy built, so easy to take along with you to record snapshots of sound that fall into your lap. I take mine everywhere. It's been on boats, tundra, constructions sites, deserts, no problem.

While the sound quality of a pocket recorder is the defining and deciding factor of it, and the LS-P4 scores quite highly, there are a few drawbacks, that prevent a 5-star score.

First of all. the battery life is iffy. 2,5 - 3 hours at best. Then you need to charge or change the battery. It's also very unfortunate that you can't power the unit from an external USB power bank. Using the right usb cable, you can charge the Olympus battery with a powerbank, but you can't record at the same time. So great for taking snapshots, but this prevents the unit being used as a tiny backup for more extensive recording projects or as a drop rig, where it would record unattended for hours on end.

Also there's unfortunately no line in, so you can't use the unit to record your dj set or gig from a line out from the mixer.

and very annyoing is the mini tripod thread. For some reason, Olympus decided to fit the LS-P4 with a smaller than normal tripod thread. It comes with a tiny adaptor that will allow you to screw it onto a standard 1/4-20 UNC photo tripod thread. But the adaptor is small and easy to loose, and is another piece of kit you need to keep an eye on. Also the adaptor is plastic, and I'm afraid the thread will wear out over time. imho, Olympus should have ditched the popout usb connector and put in a standard tripod thread.

Pretty much standard these days for pocket recorders, but the lack of a jogwheel to set input levels means you can't adjust input levels without digital clicks and contact noise.

Overall, great little recorder, and mine sees a lot of use, but alas, no replacement for the sony pcm m10, which is still the best pocket recorder that was made to this day.

I am very surprised that these recorders are not more popular. They are truly amazing! Incredible small and packed with features. Very easy to use and quite good sound. The size for me is really a huge plus, I can always have it with me and I don't even notice (it is more or less as big as half an Iphone 4). For doing field recording, the best I have encountered (I have already had the Zoom h4n and the Zoom h2, and for me the build quality of the Olympus is much higher)

If you are looking for an extra compact and good sounding hand recorder, look no further.
It's super small, has internal memory, great battery life, it can recharge a regular rechargeable AAA and has decent built in microphones.
Of course, don't except to record stunning quality quiet ambience or subtle foley, the mics are not quiet or sensitive enough for that, but it shines as a guerrilla pocket recorder that can handle medium or loud sounds properly.
Not a big fan of the interface, and it was difficult to find a proper case (in the end I created my own sleeve), but these are minor issues. It also can't function as an interface. I also have to mention that the preamp for an external mic is very lousy.
In the end, I would recommend this over Zoom H1 or Roland R-07 due to the form factor, recharging ability and the internal memory.

Great little recorder
ighighigh, 30.12.2018
I bought this as a recorder I could just keep in my pocket.
- It's got a metal body and feels well made. It sounds pretty great too.
- Bit of a shame that the gain is adjusted by increments set with buttons.
- In built pres have plugin power and sound pretty clean.
- Pretty impressed by the reach of frequency response with the in built mics. No 192kHz recording which is a shame as I'd like to use coil/contact mics with it that'll have content very high up the audio spectrum.
- Not much handling noise compared to my D100, but still a slight issue there.
- Charging and internal memory are great.
- I bought this before the Sony A10 came out. I would've had a look at that first. But I think this is a great sounding recorder and the metal body makes it feel solid and well made.
