The best performance by far, at this price! Superb.

I have a few Oktava MK012 already, some of which I've bought secondhand. Recently, I've gone over to using small diaphragm condenser mics on saxophones in a live situation (as opposed to "traditional" SM57) and needed some more.

I bought a pair of MK012 in black, that look and feel beautiful, and come in a little wooden box. The sound though remains fantastic - smooth and detailed with a slight HF lift to add a little "air". Mids are totally natural and uncoloured, and the bass is warm and uncharactistically full for a small diaphragm mic. Many lower cost condersers have a harsh "spitty" quality to the treble whcih cannot easily be corrected with eq. These certainly don't have that problem, which is whay they have been favourably compared to the likes of Neumann and Shoeps which thoough probably better still, cost a great deal more.

The clip works well and is all metal, and the fit and finish is better on this recent pair than the ones I've had for years. Oktava's manufacturing has obviously.improved and this is really pleasing.

In summary, they're perfect mics for saxes, drum overheads, trumpets and acoustic guitar in a live situation. I've also used them as main ORTF pair for recording choirs.

Three letters: WOW.
Dave Saxon, 23.07.2019
I have read the raving reviews about this mic, so I expected to be blown away, but the reality is even more shocking in a positive way. These microphones are little gems, truly brilliant. The russians know their business. Build quality is excellent, they are very small, the little wooden box is giving some style too.
The sound is unbelievable. I have tested it with a jumbo body guitar, which is a replica of the famous Gibson J200, by Sigma. This is not a bright sounding guitar, more on the darker side, with a lot of bass, and body. When I read the reviews about this mic, and some mentioned this is also a darker sounding mic, I was worried a bit, as I thought my guitar will sound a bit dull with them. I was wrong. The highs are like silk, very precise and detailed, the bass response is killer, and the mids are very stable and punchy. No harshness here. Just pure, classy, great, lively sound. You have to be careful with positioning, though, to avoid boominess, don't position the mic straight to the soundhole. I reached the sweet spot with positioning one mic to the 12th fret, the other a bit higher than the soundhole, and taken a bit futher from the body aiming downwards. The result was just like a very professional, album ready studio quality...in my living room. Oktava is the real deal!

Nice warm sounding microphones
jwork123nl, 06.03.2019
I bought the MK012 matched pair (cardoid) to record my grand piano. Using the Rode stereo bar with them. The Oktava's are very small and light, easy to setup.

About the sound: they create a warm and detailed sound. I think you cannot describe them as neutral, but they sound very nice, not hyped, I like the sonic character.

They are about 10dB less sensitive than my rode NT-1A large diafragm mike. Also they produce a slight bit of noise, not a problem at all for the piano or an instrument like a guitar, which is loud enough. (The noise is about the same level as the background sound in my room.)

I also bought the Thomann spins, but did not use them up to now (not necessary yet), the provided clamps work well enough (mounted on a mic stand on a marble stable floor)

Conclusion:
I will keep these, since I like the particular sonic quality and they compliment very well my matched pair of Rode NT-1A LDC. They make my grand piano sound vibrant and alive.

Perhaps for my next pair of SDC I will buy the SE8, because this seems to be very high quality, and neutral sounding (for recording my acoustic guitar). And would again nicely complement the Oktavas.

Lovely Dark Mics
danbamberaudio, 11.06.2018
These have been used extensively by me and other engineers in both Studio's, Live Recording Environments and Live 500+ capacity gigs.
Darker sounding (less bright) mics than Rode NT5's. Which are comparable price wise.
Great on Overheads, Ride, Hats, Choirs, Acoustic Guitars. Used on Snares, Toms, Primary School Choirs and String Sections in a studio environment.
Comes in a wooden case and includes some -10dB inline pads - never needed to use them.
Probably should buy another matched pair as they're always in use.
