Oktava MK 319 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone, The Mic is a fixed-pattern, cardioid, large diaphragm mic intended for studio and broadcast useage. featuring a classic design gold spattered teflon capsule teamed with low noise discreet preamplifier circuitry, resulting in a smooth frequency response from 40 hz to 16khz, with a gentle presence rise giving especial warmth and clarity to the human voice - made in Russia -
Apart from being built like a high-security communication controller on a nuclear submarine, this microphone delivers quality on every single level. The Russians are not famous for making many things, but the ones they do, they truly outclass everyone else.
Now, I know that there are higher class and better quality microphones out there, but this Oktava (read Monster) here is hands-down the best microphone I've ever used in a studio. It has such a balanced and dynamic frequency response, that I seriously think there is no instrument or voice you can't record with this (with the exception of treble frequency based percussion and really high-pitched orchestral sections).
Voices come off as warm and natural on it, with a perfect cut-back on some higher mids in the vocal frequencies - which gives outstanding clarity without the nasal quality many condenser mics carry with them. The mic also gives the most balanced frequency pick-up I've ever heard on condensers, which makes it ideal for post-recording equalization, effects and editing - whereas with most other mics, there is always a lot of cutting necessary, and never enough balance prior to recording, and post-recording as well.
You DO need a pop-filter with this one though, and the shock-stand is also a necessity, as it really is sensitive to vibrations - but this is its only drawback. The build quality is superb, and I think you could actually lug it around like a Dynamic Microphone, and it could easily take the beating.
All in all, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a low-range price but for high-range quality. I am convinced that if this mic was made elsewhere and marketed better, it would definitely dominate the market - but even as it is, it is a great product for the price, and probably one of the best Money-For-Value deals I've come across in years when it comes to music equipment!
