Excellent processing, warm sound, unfortunately no dynamics

psyndrome, 24.06.2014
The question is, what do you expect? Whoever expects handling and sound like a normal acoustic cello is wrong here. If you're not afraid and takes time to learn a bit, you'll be rewarded with a rich, warm and detailed sound. The sound is basically very nasal, no matter what set of strings is wound up.

The e-cello by NS Design is impeccably, really excellent processed. You have the choice between a 4-, 5- and 6-string (CR4, CR5, CR6). For which cello do you decide now? It is difficult to find a suitable sound for the 5th (and 6th), which does not differ too much from the resonance and warmth of the previously set 4-string set (AGDC). So if you are interested in a 5th or even a sixth string, you should deal with it before buying. An additional string is so easy not to act, as the fretboard is broadened and you definitely have to learn. My thing was not at the end. This affects sound and conversion alike.

Feedback problems I had none. Not worth mentioning. This is really framed excellent quality - typical Ned Steinberger derived from the basses. I have never played over ground effect / PreAmp. My experience speaks only for playing the cello exclusively via the Ableton Live / Audio interface in combination with many DAW internal EQ and compressor stories.

Dynamikumfang: This is indeed a bitter disappointment and was one of the exclusion criteria. No matter how much or little pressure I had with the bow: it was almost always the same volume, which one disengaged the instrument. When plucking it is not quite so bad, but unfortunately very similar. One struggles off and nevertheless reaches the state of a mezzoforte volume. This does not really work.

Switching between the three different modes can be seen in my opinion, but you do not always turn. There is a big difference between "plucking" and "stroking". The third "Electric Cello" mode is hardly different from the brushing modes.

The customer is active - that is, he is operated with two 9V blocks on the back of the cello under cover. It has to be changed quite often. There is unfortunately no on / off switch. Sometimes you forget to turn the volume knob after playing. Well solved: with the help of screws also located on the back of the cello, the EQ of the customer can be fine-tuned. A third mid-lo and possibly fourth controller Mid-Hi would have been nice. The batteries do not last very long. An LED would be helpful when you should change the batteries. You can hear it, however, as soon as the sound becomes scratchy (similar distortion). So it makes sense to always use fresh batteries for a concert. Why the manufacturer does not use mignon cells, I am unclear. Eneloop batteries last much longer.

The stand with the cello is very heavy. This is not recommended. Feels uncomfortable, wobbles, unfamiliar fixed points etc. - my thing was not. It is recommended to buy the CEPS Endpin Stand - to match the NS Design CR -Celli. The setup is relatively fast and uncomplicated and you get very close to playing on a real cello.

Appearance: of course this is again subjective. I have had the experience that people wanted to see the previously played acoustic cello. "Do not care", one can think, but a cello with body makes something indeed. This starts with the tour, that one with the small pocket of the E-Cello is not recognizable as a cellist - I wanted to mention it. All ask what "NS" design is ... So, of course, you also get into the conversation in the train. :)
Anyway, a better experience I made when I switched live between the different Celli. The sound difference and the optics - this stimulus found the audience / audience interesting. Basses and deep percussionsounds come very well with the NS Design Cello - no comparison to Piezoton buyers.

The tunability of the strings is absolutely fantastic thanks to the tuning system - like a guitar. Gone is the torment with loose swirls, which you always have to chalk with chalk. :)

Conclusion: at this high price, one should try the device urgently within the 30 days before, before you finally keep it. I used this cello for single recordings (no live concerts) in the studio for certain passages of some titles. A year later, however, a new buyer arrived.

NS 5-String Cello

Ollo, 29.11.2009
Negative:

As a high e-string "recommends" NS D'Addario guitar strings Cellosaiten only C / G / D / A are manufactured - NOCH! Since one could have long been concerned about the serial production ... I found something disappointing, as it sounds a quite big compromise (except perhaps with extremely guitarist effect settings like OD etc.).
The otherwise extremely stable stand is unfortunately just too short to be able to play or to stand (for all the larger than 1.67m ...) Moreover, a stopper on the inner tube would have made sense to inadvertently pulling out the whole rod Which can be tricky with the cello mounted. But you get used to it.

Positive:

Fantastic playability in all situations! At first, the idea was very sympathetic for me to be able to do without the missing corpus on the thumb position, it is precisely this, which can be played nearly as close to the bridge almost as by itself (at least in comparison to my accustical cello).

Very successful are the 3 modes for the bridge pickup:
1. for accustical sound painted with the bow
2. for arc-swept but more electrically synthetic sound
3. for Pizzicato! Very powerful and sustained when plucking bass licks and bass solos! BRILLIANT!

Settings on the bridge and neck I have not yet made, but are possible if necessary to change the strings. The entire processing of the cello is apt and the design speaks for itself! The included gigbag is also very robust. An outer pocket with Velcro closure is for the 3-leg stand. The cello itself is once again protected by a separate softly padded cover and the bow by a velvet-like bow tube.

30 years ago I had my first cello concert. Now I'm learning a new instrument that I can play ... Thanx Ned, great work !!!
