I bought this guy to use it in MAX MSP to control complex live processing devices, and it's so cool!
First, what is very important of the hardware part: You have 16 knobs and eight pads, plus 4 mini pads on the right part. The controller is very heavy, solid, under it's fully antislip, so it doesn't move at all, and that's what you want my friend. The usb cable is about 1 m long and it's well done.
Software part: It comes with a mini bundle of software including ableton lite, a sample pack, a basic midi software, and more important: the launch control editor. Each single control cab be edited as you wish, you can select CC, note message, range, channel etc... Pretty cool huh?
"Only" 8 banks are editable (called "user" ones), Other 8 are not editable, send the same message but with different channel information (9 to 16), so at the end you can actually use all 16 bank as you wish.
You have a total of 256 knobs (16x16) and 192 pads (12x16). It is enough?
You can change (prepare!) another bank while youre sliding one knob!
Cons: _The only con is that pads has only a two way velocity, but since you can set the min and max value is not that bad. Plus, every single pad can be a simple "click" or a "toggle" according on how you set it. _The knobs are a little too near, so if you a live performer you want to be careful when move several parameters.
However, That is absolutely a best buy ever! If think that it could be perfect if the pads have complete velocity and the knobs a little more spaced, thus, don't think twice, buy and play! :)
P.S. Complete integration with Ableton Live, shortucts etc....
Assuming you let the default knob CC's and pad keys determine mappings to your synths / devices, no problem. The issue is with saving and designing your own templates. On OSX, your own templates are saved to a default location that is deleted by the system often, and you cannot set a folder of your own choice as the location to which you save your templates- this is crap! Its not been changed since release, thus the three pointer- if that was solved, I would push it to 4.5.... if the pads had velocity sensitivity, THEN we'd be talking 5 points. If you don't mind these gripes, still a good buy for the price. Especially handy with iOS apps (main reason I got it in the first place)
