Nektar Panorama P1

smallcogmusic, 17.09.2014
I have been looking for something like this for a very long time! -As a long time Cubase user I have been frustrated by the lack of feel when adjusting EQ, VSTis etc. Theres something not as instant or usable as twiddling knobs - The P1 handles this in a very elegant fashion. EQ is now 'twidlleable' to your hearts content and is so much easier to adjust in realtime, The VSTis, especially the synths are far more versatile than their small feature set would indicate when you can tweak and hear the effect straight away. The bright sharp colour screen is very useful and provides excellent feedback on the state of the active controls. Having the illuminated, dedicated transport buttons is great and almost worth the price on its own! As a Reason user this device also transforms some of the more inaccessible functions on Maelstrom and Thor open and reactive. I've created more new sounds from these since I bought the P1 than in the many years previously that I owned Reason!

Because of its versatility the P1 takes some getting used to - some of the functions involve the use of function and tab keys but these become 2nd nature after a while. The manuals online take you through various learning processes (although the font is a little small and I cant see a way to conveniently print them out) and it is definitely essential to go through them all - unlike many devices there is a lot you may miss without them!

Build quality is excellent - the knobs and faders feel great and as the finish it sooo black and shiny they have thoughtfully including a cleaning cloth!

All in all a great device and as other programs are added it can only get better!

Excellent support for Logic and Bitwig

Chick Sangria, 16.07.2016
I needed a DAW controller with as many and well-engineered buttons and controls as well as an intuitive operation, ie "deep integration" into programs, especially Logic Pro X. As you can read in many forums, Nektar always updates the mappings Their equipment. Also a mail request was quickly answered from America, the PDF documentation is good. All evaluations of the panorama devices before 2015 (also the Amazona review here on the product page) are now obsolete in terms of software support.

A few examples: With Logic Pro X's Retro Synth, the P1 can unfold fully. All parameters are intuitively accessible, the faders become ADSR controllers for amplifiers and filters. I have the feeling for the first time that I can build sounds with a software synth. If there is a device that can translate software organically into hardware, then this is the case. It is worth a lot if you do not have to assign anything yourself.

Native Instruments Komplete is also supported.
Practically the device is synonymous for tuning EQs, effects etc. There is even a step sequencer function, but only under Bitwig. I would also like Logic.

Since OSX El Capitan the panorama devices work class compliant, without drivers. You can not use keyboard macro commands. With Logic I do not need this, because I work a lot with the keyboard anyway.

The keyboard keyboard of P4 and P6 did not please me, too much plastic feeling. A design price is also not the P1 because the glossy surface and the used fonts sell the inside of the device under value. And since the P1 will never be a design classic, there will never be accessories like skins (similar to MPC) or stands.

And here we come right to a serious design flaw: the bevel of the front edge. The unit can not be placed vertically. From the support I got a tip for a stand, with which one can position the P1 diagonally, so the display is good to see: the eBoot mesh laptop stand. However, you still need anti-slip strips (moss rubber etc.) To the bottom edge.

Somewhere in the Internet someone has complained that the knobs and fader are not illuminated. This does not correspond, however, to the concept, since everything there is to read is on the display, optionally on the computer display. The arrangement of the controls allow me to find all positions blind.

I have the device only barely a month in use, so I can not say anything about the durability. For the live use would have to be considered whether the production of a Thon-case is worthwhile. Otherwise, the device just fits into a backpack.
