MXL R77
Lluis L1975, 28.10.2017
I use this tape microphone in the studio. Before spending a fortune on some large tape micro, I wanted to try this low cost alternative to see its operation and response.

Advantage:
-For this price, I think an incredible micro. We must take into account what we are going to use it for. I use it especially for recordings of electric, trumpets, strings, or any instrument that wants a more "vintage" sound or just make warmer when it comes to very sharp instruments. Normally I do not use it alone, I combine it with some other condenser or dynamic one.
-The presentation of the microphone is incredible, and only the box that brings to keep it worth what they ask. In addition, it brings a good Monster cable, a desk stand with its respective nut, gloves for handling, and a mop to clean it (the fingerprints remain on the mic).

Cons:
-It's pretty heavy. You have to be careful when handling it and place it on the mic stand since it is very easy for it to slip and fall to the ground.
-Despite being very heavy, it is quite DELICATE. We must be careful with the places where the micro is exposed, while taking care of the sound pressures that we are going to exercise on the capsule. It is convenient to put anti-pop whenever you are going to record voices or instruments of strong sound pressures.
Also, be careful not to get any phantom power, or you will be without micro.
-It requires a lot of gain, so if you do not have a good low noise preamplifier, if you are going to record voices or low volume instruments, a "precious" noise will come out. Hear, there are those who like that touch of noise, but it is not usually convenient or pleasant.
-It has a huge sensitivity to low frequencies, so it is not easy to take the correct distance to the sound source sometimes.

In short: a great ribbon micro for this price. If you want transparent, bright and hyper-sharp recordings, this is NOT your mike. But if you are looking for something "vintage", with a warm sound and with a personal vintage touch, it is perfect. Of course, be careful with its delicacy.

A very great microphone !!!
Daniel C., 04.11.2015
I have the R77 brought me to an alternative to the standard large and small diaphragm microphone for the recording of acoustic guitars and room for drums and electric guitar to have.
I noticed it because of its design, which reminds the legendary RCA Type 77. Probably also the designation R77.
Surprisingly, I noticed the good processing in this price class. Apart from all the gold and chrome, which is a bit too extreme to me, the processing is first cream. From rubber buffers between the clamping screws on the suspension to the robust body structure.
The sound can also be seen. It is balanced over the entire frequency response and has a slight frequency drop at about 18kHz, so it does not sound shrill in the treble. Also very warm and voluminous.
What I also still very great is the accessories. This includes a table stand which is synonymous very well processed, a 10m long Low Noise microphone cable, which also have a good quality, a dust cloth for cleaning the microphone according to the set, velvet gloves for those who want to go more flegsam with their microphones and a Robust velvet upholstered wooden case for the microphone.
In general, this microphone is a very great microphone which is rare in this quality for such a price. This microphone should be a good alternative to the big diaphragm in good homestudios and also in professional studios. If you are looking for a fat and voluminous guitar sound, this microphone should not be missed.
