Perfect Model D

Brian O., 23.01.2017
I'm very lucky to have bought one of these reissues. Apparently I was the first in europe to order from Thomann, which surprised me no end. I've wanted a Minimoog since I was a kid in the mid-80's. I bought a Little Phatty some years back as my first Moog. The built quality was stunning, but the sound just didn't do it for me. I found it to be sterile and too perfect. I like my synths to have character and feel alive. So I figured the better option would be the Voyager, and I picked up a black edition second hand. Another beautifully made synth, with a stunning sound, but I was surprised by how much menu diving was involved to get at the sound underneath. So I sold that one too. Since then i've collected a range of synths including the Jupiter 8, Jupiter 4, System 100, Korg Monopoly, Oberheim OBX, Multimoog, but he Minimoog was still missing.

When Moog announced this I was convinced it was going to be 5k upwards, and whilst its by no means cheap, i felt the actual price was fairly respectable considering how specialist the synth is. Its never going to sell as many as the Odyssey reissue as Moog have maintained and possibly surpassed the quality rather than a mass produced recreation. So I sold my Prodigy to put towards this, and i'm delighted I did.

It was packaged beautifully and the synth itself is a masterpiece of a synth. The build quality is astonishing. The playability of the keys, which are the best I have in my studio. The sturdy wooden and metal case. The knobs, the front panel, the switches. The whole thing is of the highest quality and feels very much like a premium instrument. When its in front of you, you can see why its an expensive synth.

As for the sound, well it sounds spectacular. Its the biggest, most evocative sound I've heard from a mono synth. The only thing that compares to it in terms of the scale of the sound is the OBX. It really is everything I had wanted from a Minimoog, and everything the Little Phatty and Voyager weren't. It feels alive, and organic, and with the addition of the LFO the sounds you can now create without sacrificing the 3rd oscillator make this the best version of the Model D. Add to that the Midi and the assignable aftertouch, and its pretty much the perfect Minimoog. I don't have an original to compare it to, and I don't care. Its beautiful.

Had I the choice, I would choose this over an original every time.

Fantastic

Matthew3022, 25.11.2016
The Minimoog Model D is considered the "holy grail" of analog synths, and it's easy to see why: It sounds unbelievably good. I have all the top plugins that emulate this synth, and although they are good, the real thing just has that magic that a plugin can't capture.

There's really not much more to say when talking about the most legendary synth ever -- it's just so amazing. I suppose if you need more "modern" features like patch memory and tons of modulation choices, then this synth isn't for you. But if you want the absolute best analog mono-synth sound, what can possibly beat this? Nothing.
