Brilliant little synth, in a class of it's own
Gunnar Grímsson 20.09.2021
I love this synth! A very interesting blend of solid and quirky and one sweep of some buttons totally change the sound. I use it mostly as a sort of 'lead' synth, using pitch to midi to trigger it with the pitch input being anything from my voice to a drum machine and it sounds great with any input.

I did need to refer a bit to the quick reference manual in the beginning but once that is done it's quite easy to program and use. I use a standard USB transformer (old phone thingie) for it with no hum or other issues. It is plastic, the buttons are a bit flimsy but hey, it's dirt cheap! The sound isn't.

If you want total predictability you should either get something else or study this one much deeper than I have. If you want to get pleasantly surprised and love following up on the random things this guy throws at you, go get it. You wont be disappointed.

I
Diverse budget sound module
Iskariot 05.12.2020
Extremely happy with what i got for the price point. A very versatile sound source. Yet this doesn't come without compromise:
Given the price range the build is cheap plastic, the knobs feel horrible and the led feedback is anything but accurate, hence the 2 star handling and 3 star quality. Luckily all this can be bypassed by using it in conjunction with the ModalApp.
The windows version is lackluster, often stops giving feedback of button manipulation on the module itself, but works fine on android. Although i still consider the need for an app connection a negative factor on the handling score. (I prefer to perform my hobby without the need for screens). It's also slightly annoying that you can't hook it up to the app but use a different power source, in some cases this caused a hum in my signal loop. (A usb splitter like arturia provides with the BSP would solve this).

These points of critique don't hold up at all at this price point for me given the insane amount of features and sounds you get. So 5 starts overall.

JJ
Tiny, portable synth which sounds huge!
Jim Jones 15.09.2020
Let me start by saying that Modal did a good job with this digital, portable mono synth.
It's well labeled and quite easy to understand. It's hands-on and with some "spread" you won't notice that it's actually just one voice.
For those who want to take it a step further or go "deeper" or just prefer a computer or touchscreen device, Modal got you covered with an editor/app.
For this price you can't go wrong. However I'd recommend the use of an external sequencer and/or controller with it. Great as sound module, esp. with some effects like delay or reverb added.

I do recommend it!

h
rich sound in a flimsy body
habahabah 30.08.2021
It is a small and portable (battery powered) but very powerful synthesizer with rich sound generation capabilities. The only drawback is the flimsy knobs, but the price outweighs that.
