I had never had a cajon before but had played a friends , so was waiting with baited breath for this to arrive, as always packaging was well done and before long I had in front of me the plain wooden box, I really like this it looks s plain and simple what more do you need, I found the light coloured wood appealing and when not in use it makes an excellent piece of furniture.
I sat down tentatively and had a go, it is much easier than you would think to get started, I have a friend who plays one and he gave me and my friends daughter a few pointers to tricks of the trade so I was able to get going with it straight away.
It is possible to adjust the screws to get more snap my friend did his for me, and also showed me how to sit at a tilted angle which can make it easier on you physically when playing. I was delighted and would end up busking with it with my friends daughter, taking turns to play it while the other sang and played guitar.
It was so good, I decided to buy a crash cymbal to go with it which greatly added to our artillery, my friend uses them with an array of percussion bits and bobs, I would personally get a cowbell to go with it as well.
It is easy to get a good rhythm accompaniment even for a beginner if you have some sense of timing and you don't need to be too fancy to provide this but you do get more brave the more you use it and find yourself throwing in fills etc.
The box stands up well to hard use for the price, obviously carting it round sea fronts gardens and town centres you are going to get a few nicks etc but at the price who can complain.
Hitting it in various places in the middle gives you a good base while the top edge gives you a snare sound, I favoured the top right corner as I look down even though my friend said I would be better using the left, it seemed more a natural fit to me. I have eventually sold it to fund towards a new guitar but I would definitely buy another, it is so much fun to play and ideal for children or adults, I even managed to p,any along to a track on a john scofield cd and it is very fulfilling, I think it was the track called popo bearing in mind he plays jazzy stuff like herbie hancock it goes to show how even a beginner can get something out of it.
If you have a room with your musical instruments in, this is definitely a must buy, any visitors regardless of skill age or gender can be pressganged into being a rhythm section at a moments notice. With your new found skill you can even join in on jam nights at the local when you're not playing bass, guitar , etc. buy one at this price what have you got to loose
