Martin Guitars D-28 (2017)

Steel-String Guitar

The Martin company has been around for over a century and its acoustic guitars are considered to be absolute classics. It is no simple task to find successful guitarists who haven't played a Martin at some point in their career.

Arguably the one absolute classic among Martin guitars is the D 28. A list of all our heroes who have been in the spotlight with one of these would be quite a long one. WIth a top made of solid sitka spruce, the back and sides from East Indian rosewood, a neck of solid mahogany, ebony fretboard, and to top it all off, a bridge of solid ebony. All very fine ingredients for producing the sound that we're all familiar with from countless hits.

The Classic!

GF. Big, 27.05.2014
When I asked my wife to describe the sound of the Martin D-28, she said it sounded like a full red Burgundy wine. I would have to agree with that. I have 3 Martins, and though they all have 'that Martin tone,' they all sound different. This guitar has that velvety smoothness as well as the 'OOMPH!' you'd expect from a Martin guitar. The lows are rich and well-defined, the mids slightly scooped, and the highs ring through just fine.

Out of the box, this guitar was eminently playable, but I have given it over to a Meistergitarrenbauer for a set-up. The frets need leveling, and they were slightly sharp on the sides, a sign of dryness. The saddle wasn't too high, so this D-28 doesn't really need the action lowered, although the nut may be filed slightly.

This is a 'bucket-list' guitar, one I hope will last me to the end of my days, and I am sure it will bring me many, many hours of enjoyment.

For any serious guitarist out there, I would heartily recommend getting a Martin D-28. You only go around once in life. Why not get a guitar that will make your heart sing everytime you play it?

D28 customer review

Patrick632, 12.06.2013
As a mature player (62) I decided to buy a quality guitar as a special present.after research and talking with other musicians I bought the Martin D28 from thomman.
The service from thomman was as ever excellent, and the guitar is fantastic the sound is unbelievable and makes my tangle wood sound like a toy.
This is not a beginners guitar it is a professional players instrument.it sounds like there is a group of guitars playing sound is big, clarity is great and build quality is superb.
Highly recommended and thomman were the best price. Best purchase ever made.
