Decent Marshall sound and features at the price of a twisted backbone.

If you're thinking about buying this amp, here's what you should know:

The sound is somewhere between "decent" to "great". It will depend on whether you like that Marshall tone or not, but also on where you play it and how loud can you play it. This is certainly a serious amp for gigging medium to medium-large venues. If you're a bedroom or small-pub player, beware: you can certainly keep this at neighbour-friendly levels, but you won't get THE tone, then. And if you crank it louder, it can get too harsh/muddy/ear-piercing for small spaces. Some people say it's the speaker, and that a speaker replacement can improve the sound.

Now, this is a versatile amp. You have clean cleans, overdriven cleans, light to heavy, mid-scooped distortion and everything in between. It all depends on your ability to dial the sound you're looking for. However, it is still a very hard-rock oriented kind of amp. You can certainly play jazz or metal with this amp, but you'd probably be better served with a Roland or a Randall. I don't expect you'd get this amp so you can play a bit of everything (that's what modelling amps are for). You get this amp because you want to rock out. It can do blues too, though it has a different flavour from, let's say, a Fender Blues Junior.

This amp looks solid and reliable enough for gigging. I'd trust this to take a hit and stay playable (though I won't be willing to make such a test). However, I advise you to take care with the grill cloth, and the knobs. They look and feel a bit fragile, as if they could break if you push them too much.

The biggest downside to it is that it weights like a truck, and if you, like me, aren't hugely muscular, you're going to have a hard time carrying it (or twist your back trying). Whoever designed this amp was also too dumb or too cheap to implement two handles at each side, so that two people could carry it with ease. This way, you're left with one single mid handle and a back ache. Not good.

Great amp but bad footswitch/channel switching.

jd5535, 10.08.2014
The tones you can get out of this amp are great and everything you'd expect out of a marshall but the one thing i dislike about it is the foot switching. theres a classic gain channel with a clean setting and a crunch setting and an ultra gain channel with a lead 1 setting and a lead 2 setting but you can only switch between the 2 channels and not the settings in between which i would find a lot more useful as i usually play on the classic gain and want to switch between the clean and crunch settings but cant without pressing the button on the front of the amp (first world problems :) ) but besides that its great value for money and you get that authentic marshall tube sound with a great celestion speaker as well. I'd recommend it for practicing and rehearsals because its great sounding and relatively small, but if you play in a similar manner to myself and would just use one channel and want to switch settings, I'd recommend saving up and getting the Marshall JVM205C although its twice the price of the DSL40c so id say try it out for yourself and see, its definitely worth a shot since overall it sounds fantastic.
