Very solid

Slimholio, 28.05.2018
I love this interface. Very simple and usable layout and of course it sounds great. I will be travelling with it and have every confidence in it's build quality to with stand the rigours of baggage handlers. I t had a solid metal housing. The direct monitoring is a good feature but i'm still getting the balance right when recording guitars. In short it's great.

Absolutely convincing. Unconditional buy recommendation.

wriess, 27.06.2018
In the 90's I did professional audio productions with sample rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz.
Since 1998, I have had nothing to do with music production either professionally or privately.
I write that because I do not know modern sampling rates like 192 kHz and I'm not used to
which might affect my judgment regarding sound quality.

Since I have been producing private music for quite some time, I finally had to get an audio interface.

The shortlisted were Focusrite Scarlett 2I2, Steinberg UR 22 and Mackie Onix Producer 2.2.
Also because I did not want to invest so much money on a low budget,
but just had a semi-professional claim to the sound of the part.

I was focused on the Mackie right from the start, as I used to have very good experiences with Mackie mixing consoles.
Nevertheless, I made the decision very difficult, but finally ordered the Mackie Onix producer at Thomann.

As always, prompt delivery, part unpacked, connected, drivers for Windows easily installed,
Everything works immediately and I was really SURPRISED and ENTHUSIASED!
I had not expected such a sound. Crystal clear, high quality, even from bad sound sources.
Very light bass in voice and vocals, but just right.

So I tested:

- Acer Labtop, Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10
- Ableton Live for recording

1. Microphone: AKG C 3000 Pro condenser microphone, XLR input 1, phantom power active

Absolutely convincing sound, even with whispered passages are high input signals and the thing sounds awesome.
The onyx preamps are really convincing.
The problems described in other posts when controlling the gain control, I can cautiously confirm.
That was really no problem at all.
Since the poties are pleasantly sluggish, adjusting the input signal in louder areas is REALLY not difficult.

2. Guitar: Fender Stratocaster, Line in 2, HiZ active

The Fender was now 2 years in the corner of the room in a case. Strings ancient.
Nevertheless, a few radio riffs recorded.
Incredible! The sound of beating the strings sounded really horrible.
Now on the onyx in Ableton again crystal clear and perfect. Really amazing.

3. Samsung Galaxy A5 Smartphone: App G-Stomper, Mini Jack Stereo to 2x Mono Jack, Line In 1 and 2

Because I actually make a lot of music on my smartphone on the go
and also, for example, the PO 33 KO of Teenage Engineering use, I needed an audio interface with 2 line inputs.
The recordings were just super good and arrived absolutely fat, with a high input signal and clear in Ableton.

4. Monitor: Pioneer A-109 Amplifier, Alesis Studio Boxes

From super-quiet to really loud, the sound is crystal clear.
And the Onix Producer 2.2 can be really loud without distorting.
The monitor knob is not quite as stiff as the other poties, but it can still be adjusted very well.

5. Headphone Output: ATH M40 Audio Technica Studiophones, closed headphone

The headphone output behaves similar to the monitor.
Very nice and stiff knob and from super quiet to really loud, the sound is crystal clear.
The headphone output can be turned on almost to the ear damage.
Probably quite unique with USB audio interfaces in this price range.

5. Mix knob and latency

Since Ableton works with the Onyx Producer, I do not have any latencies (almost)
I assume that this behavior is similar with the ASIO driver on other DAWs under WIN 10 depending on the processor of the computer.
When recording with headphones, turn the Mix knob towards "Input" to the left to hear guaranteed latency.
Otherwise, the knob can also be turned to the right in the direction of "DAW" to hear the signal from the DAW.

6. Midi In / Out: Roland XP 10

Midi In and Out work flawlessly, in Ableton with no noticeable latency.
Incidentally, the parallel operation with a USB controller (in my Arturia Minilab MK 2) is no problem at all.

Conclusion:

The sound of the Onyx Producers 2.2 I think is really SUPERIOR.
The sound quality actually surprised me completely.
Connection and installation of the driver were completely problem-free.
Everything worked immediately as desired.
The whole works very well and stably processed and the controls are great to use wg. the pleasant binding.

It is cheaper than the competitors of Steinberg and Focusrite and has in contrast to the latter also Midi In / Out.
