61 Full size keys, velocity-sensitive with aftertouch
The keybed feels fantastic. It's why I chose the Code 61. Officially, the keys are semi-weighted, but they have a nice pushback that feels very piano-like. The aftertouch is easy to activate and doesn't requite the travel distance of something like the Novation Impulse. It's true there was once an issue with the aftertouch's response time, but firmware version 1.2 resolved this.
Drum pads feel good and are velocity sensitive. You can customize the color of all 16 with just a few keystrokes.
Mapping options are exhaustive: MIDI, Mackie/HUI, and HID. (In a perfect world, there would have been one more row of buttons. But you get 4 banks for each of the 9 buttons, so that's 36 assignments per mapping option.) Mod and pitch wheels have a smooth feel, there's a ninth master fader (many controllers offer only 8), and the buttons audibly "click" when pressed, providing nice feedback.
The Not as Good:
The encoders are pretty average. Several of mine are too jumpy and require solid a 30-60 seconds of "warmup" twisting before they respond smoothly. Also, the XY pad was a nice idea, but it's not very responsive and the bevel the designer's placed around the edge makes it difficult to reach the outermost values of whatever parameter(s) you've mapped.
Since firmware update 1.2, I've had a couple freeze-ups, but I can't definitively link this to the Code yet.
All in all, this is a solid controller with lots of features and a high quality keybed that separates it from similarly priced competition. M-Audio has now updated the firmware twice, which is a great sign for both the company and this particular line.
I'm happy that i choosed this model of midi keyboard. I'm newbie in digital music area and I never had a midi keyboard, but I played piano. This keyboard feels really good. Very good material. Drum pad also is nice. I started to learn Ableton Live application that is in bundle with M-Audio Code 61. And i liked it too. I'm glad to buy this thing and I recomend it to all novice and maybe advanced musicians too.
