Line6 Spider Jam

Electric Guitar Combo Amp

Back in 2000 when the first POD came out, many people spoke of it as the Holy Grail of guitar amplification. Thanks to its modelling capability, Line6 delivers all classic and modern guitar sounds, produces practically any effect imaginable and comes with speaker simulation which leaves nothing out, even when transmitted straight to the mixer.

With the Spider Jam, Line6 offers a combo, which is an ideal jam partner and up to every trick. User-programmable presets from 12 amp models can be stored on 32 memory slots - the optional shortboard is required - 400 presets (200 song-based, 200 artist-created presets) can also be retrieved; Plus an FX processor with 7 different effects, of which 3 can be used at the same time - everything is really possible. A clear display makes it easy to create and manage sounds. The built-in tuner also makes you happy, so you need - except the floorboard - no more treads.

Now to the special features of the Spiderjam: atypical for a guitar amp, the 75 Watter has a 1 x 12" Celestion fullrange speaker with a 2" tweeter on board. (I imagine just how ugly it would be to have to listen to it with a classic tube amp ...). Since Line6 is famous for optimal frequency correction / speaker simulations, this makes sense here, ensuring the JAM's Hi-fi standard sound.

The heart of the JAM is the Endless Jam Engine (over 100 "Endless Jams", recorded by LA studio musicians), with which the budding virtuoso can endlessly play around to professional backing tracks. (What used to hurt my bandmates when I improvised for half an hour on their rhythmic variations of a theme...). Anyone who wants to do their won thing has a 24-minute looper; In addition a second instrument or a CD / MP3 player can be connected and of course also benefit from the full-range speakers.

Very well thought out - for people who like to jam alone, actually a must!

Great amp for playing at home.
Daiba, 12.08.2018
Although there are a lot of premade sounds to choose from, I find it can be difficult to find one that I would stick with for long periods of time, but if you spend long enough you can emulate a lot of really good classic 'tones' and also sculpt you own decent sounds.

The in-built recording feature is my favourite thing about this amp, though it could benefit from an arm & threshold type of system. I am currently using this amp for home recording but most of the 'tone' is coming from my pedals (DS1X, BD2).

I wouldn't record with this amp without using some pedals, but with the right setup, a really good sound can be achieved. I recommend this amp for any home use situation, but be prepared to work for a while to really figure out a sound you like.

Pros:

A very large array of different 'tones' are available to suit practically any genre.

Good quality, built-in effects and tuner.

Decent selection of drum and full band backing tracks.

Record sound, store 'tones' & effects on amp (or SD card).

Cons:

A wide selection of 'tones', but many fall short in appeal.

Can be difficult to get the sound you are looking for without using pedals.

The interface can be annoying to use, especially when naming things.

The best practice amp ever built
21.10.2015
I have been playing guitar for nearly forty years now, and have owned plenty of amps etc. but this one is the best.

I have had this fantastic piece of kit for nearly 3 years now, and am very pleased with it. Compact, versatile, and loud, it forms a central position in our band.

With the flick of just one power switch you have instant access to the full range of a band in a box, recording, and effects. Perfect for quickly creating new songs as well as practicing old ones and covers.

It is very easy and intuitive to use despite having such a massive range of functions. A great range of tones and effects means that I have no need for a load of extra pedals, boxes and cables.

The included backing tracks are great for practising in a range of different styles and improving your versatility as a musician, as well as excellent discipline for timing. Alternatively, you can just select drums as backing.

The built in looper is an amazing addition. Able to record loops up to 30 minutes! It is best used with one of the Line6 FBV pedalboards for uninterrupted easy looping.

Another great feature is the SD card for saving WAV files of your tracks. These can then be played back or transferred to your computer for editing and archiving.

Being able to input a microphone, electric guitar, keyboard, mp3 player all at once is fantastic for multi-instrumentalists and those who sing and play.

The speakers do a great job and the 75W is plenty for practice and rehearsal, as well as holding its own in small venues alongside a drum kit, PA and bass amp. The SJ is solidly built with a strong handle and looks great too.

I have to admit there was a problem with the unit I got initially, which degenerated. However, Thmman's brilliant 3 year warranty got it replaced at no cost whatsoever to me - now that is what I call service!

So buy one and you will never regret it!

Very good amplifier for the price range. I use it mainly at home for jamming along with the already onboard tracks and also with some homemade tracks.
Some presets are not perfect, but with some adjustments, the sound comes out perfect.
