Line6 Micro Spider

Electroacoustic Guitar Combo

Back in 2000 when the first POD came out, many people spoke of it as the Holy Grail of guitar amplification. Thanks to its modelling capability, Line6 delivers all classic and modern guitar sounds, produces practically any effect imaginable and comes with speaker simulation which leaves no wishes unfulfilled, even when transmitted straight to the mixer.

The Line6 Micro Spider combo offers itself up as a fine practice amp. The only sacrifices made were in the number of amp models and presets (4 Spider III amp models and 1 Acoustic Model, 5 presets).

It is also an FX processor with 6 different effects. A frequency corrected headphone output and CD/MP3 input are of great advantage when practising. A great dwarf that makes practising fun.

Very nice little room practice amp.
I wanted to have affordable 2-5watt amp with speaker as big as possible, which can also run on batteries.
Before I had Roland Microcube, which was fine but at higher volume, its tiny 5" speaker was becoming unpleasant to listen, and it had only "tone" pot instead of 3-band EQ. Then I had Roland Cube 20X and Orange Crush 20R with 8" speakers for room practice, which had much better sound, but I needed something more portable with batteries.

I tried also Vox DA5, but I decied to go with Line6 Microspider as Vox had some background noise.
This amp have couple very nice fetures. There is a basic noise gate, which I use all the time as I play mostly high gan stuff, and it is working good. Each channel (Acoustic, Clean, Crunch, Metal and Insane) have it's own memory, so once set you don't need to configure it every time when you change channel (eq, effects, boost, gate, channel vol, gain). There is also a master volume knob, tuner, MP3 in, mic in, phones/recording out, and variety of basic efects (flanger/chorus, phaser, tremolo, reverb, sweep and tape echo with tap tempo button). And strap for easier handling.

Regarding sound, one should be aware that this is affordable small amp with small speaker, so you can't expect miracles but it should cover your needs as small room practice amp. Amp have 6 watt which is 2x more than needed for home practice in my opinion, and speaker is 15watt at 8 Ohm, 6.5" size. When volume set more than half, you can notice that speaker is having struggle with low frequencies that amp is sending, although is is very loud so it will rarely be used at home on volume level more than half. Anyway, my plan for future is to get better speaker by the time, maybe 6" 30W Eminence or similar.

The only thing that is missing on this amp to make it extra is footswitch option to change channels and efects/boost. But I don't believe Line6 will do it, because it will then raise the price, and it is not common in this class of amps. Maybe also power supply should go inside amp, instead on power cable, because there is enough space inside the box.
And one thing that is not by my taste, and that is battery cover which is fixed with velcro. It is doing it's purpose, but I got used to different system on Roland Microcube, and velcro seems a little bit funny.

If I had to get another portable room amp, I will get Line6 Microspider again. Afordable, easy to use, portable and usable....and nice looking too.

Good amplifier

Aleksei T., 03.09.2015
This is a good amplifier. The only real problem I have with it is that effects are combined in a way that allows only for a limited number of ways you can actually use them. Also, sound-wise it is a bit on the flat side compared to my other amp which has a tube amplification stage. This one is excellent for practice and for carrying around for friendly gigs.
