Are Laney sandbagging this amplifier?
Gain_Badger, 30.05.2015
Every other 6v6 tubed amplifier is around 15 watts with a Fender oddball running 22. 10 watts + 10" speaker is a little too convenient. Maybe they don't want it to eat into sales of the 12?
Anyway, a simple to operate amp with real drive behind it, belying the 10 watt claim.
Darker and much cleaner in tone than an el84 equipped amp, it evokes many Fender and 70's classic rock tones. It doesn't really do bright and chime, but it does do very good cleans through classic rock and really sings with smoky, smokin' blues.
Through an external 1x12" and it shows the limitations of the stock HH speaker, which while not bad, is nothing special. Not worth replacing it though as terms such as 'muffled','woffly' or 'harsh' don't apply. It is still a stock 10" in what is after all a small cab.
Loud is a term through the cab. As is controlled, driven, ballsy and present. This is a very 'present', touch sensitive amplifier and it is a pleasure to stand in front of it and make my guitar make some very nice sounds indeed.
Control wise, there is a ( pre-amp ) gain, a ( master ) volume and a tone control which Laney say is more a 'light and dark' control. On/off, hi-lo inputs and a power indicator complete the sparse panel. You don't need more.
At the moment, I'm mostly playing poppy/grungey/ska-punk with plenty of 70's type classic rock noodlings thrown in. It copes very well with crunched cleans. Sometimes, I smooth it out with some jazzy inspired lines and a roll off of the volume and tones on the guitar means I'm there in a second. Very versatile and responsive.
It doesn't do \m/ metal and neither do I. Any attempt at a modern metal tone is met with amp disdain. Whilst it takes pedals well up to a point, this is one I'd advise metallers to avoid. Everyone else, dig in and enjoy.

Incredible Amp for the Price
Aaaaaaaalex, 21.09.2018
Considering the price of this amp, it is absolutely brilliant.
Only 3 Stars for features, as the control panel is quite tiny - 3 dials, and only one for tone control - this means that you have no control over individual frequency bands, only the overall 'warmth' of the amp. That being said, despite the tone control restrictions, there are a large range of tones available. I usually keep tone on full for nice sparkly cleans, but you can always turn it way down and get some buttery rhythm tones too.

Nice cleans on this amp when the gain is down (a Tera Echo pedal in the chain sounds clear and really compliments this amp's brighter clean tones), and the small wattage means it's a breeze to drive the power amp and get some really nice crumble and drive if you want it.
I've even mic'd this amp and used it in a gig - it's not loud enough on it's own, but keeping the volume high and micing it allows you to get the screaming tone without deafening everyone in a small venue.

In terms of build quality, the amp has as decent amount of weight to it, and feels well-assembled. The leatherette material wrapping the amp is soft and delicate - if you really wanted to, you could gouge it with your fingernail, but the delicate nature of the upholstery almost suits the amp.
The carry handle is made from thick, incredibly soft rubber. When you pick up the amp, the handle itself elongates to support the weight, but it's thickness ensures it can handle the load, and it contracts back to its original size when put back down - I can't stress enough how pleasant and comfortable this handle makes transport of the amp.

Very happy with this amp, and it's size means it never gets in the way, even in my tiny bedroom.
