Kurzweil PC3 K7

Controller Keyboard

For many years, the name Kurzweil stands for assertive sounds and professional controller and editing functions. The PC3K convinces with the complete sound inventory of the K-2600 series in combination with modern opportunities such as a USB connection to the computer, software editor, integration of USB storage devices and non-volatile flash memory with which your own samples remain applicable without loading time after turning off the device. This sample option the PC3K is compatible with all the available sounds for Kurzweil synthesizers since the publication of the K-2000 models.

Among the synthesizer workstations the PC3K is one of the few instruments that also provides alternatives to a sample-based sound generation - for example a drawbar organ based on physical modeling and the virtual-analogue synthesizer VA-1, which compared to earlier versions has been further developed significantly especially in the filter section.

First time Kurzweil user

Steve59, 19.12.2013
Having moved through Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, Nord and latterly Korg Triton LE to this Kurzweil, I have finally found the keyboard that suits me in terms of playability, programmability and quality of sound.

The semi-weighted keys give me the feel of the Nord and the pianos are better than anything else I've had (not tried the fantom or kronos - out of my financial league!).

The Organs are just as good as the Electro but the drawbars are so much better than the Nord's buttons.

The quality of the synth samples and the capabilities of V.A.S.T. is simply mind boggling!

The seqeuncer is OK, nothing special but it does the job as well as the one on my Triton LE

If you're in the market for a good quality workstation and you find the Korg too sterile sounding or the Roland too plastic looking, try one of these!

The only drawback is the weight - at 18 kilos it's a lot heavier than my Triton LE. It seems robust enough for gigging anyway!

I bought mine from Thomann and got a ribbon controller and Kore 64 ROM upgrade for the same prices as the PC3k7 on it's own!

Never used a ribbon controller before but it works seamlessly & I think I could use it on stage - the supplied sustain / leslie pedal is excellent.

The Kore 64 samples are good but would appeal more to someone creating music from the 21st century more than the 1960-1990's stuff I play.

It's the real sound

18.05.2016
Admittedly: I am one of the eternally yesterday, never change a running system ?,? Seldom what better after? And such sayings.

But after 25 years with various Ensoniq synths it was easy to try something new. The call of Kurzweil is legendary and as a hardcore fan of American sounds and synthesizer, the choice was quickly decided, as well as I have their Micro-Piano in the setup.

Ordered with much anticipation, fast delivery, short joy about the genius pianos KB3-fashion etc., but then ?. Long face and hanging corners of the mouth. The operation and editing, programming of setups, the mini-display, all reminded very much of times long past. "What else has to look different?" Only the free PC sound editor brings some light to the end of the tunnel.

So, in short, the box goes back again.

On the recommendation of a friend I got a Korg Kronos. With headphones and alone without comparison, this miracle machine sounds really great, the graphically overloaded display of course makes a first impression. Class, what you can do it all. When listening properly, however, came quickly a few doubts about the sound quality. For what do I need 10x "German grand piano", which differ only in nuances, the same then with "Japanese Grand" and the various other nature and E-Pianos, etc. So you can fill the benches as well. A few good sounds are already there, but so real hammers? Above all the wind instruments and ensemble are really weak at the Korg. Down to the Internet, download sounds? Nope. Costs all really much money, which one gets for it only afterwards.

So, last chance, the Kurzweil again unpack, both devices parallel test.

Yes and then ? ? ? ?

Surprise ! ! ! !

All of a sudden, the bite has a clear head again. Great E-and A-Pianos, which then really differ from the sound character, really fat wind and blues- Stringensemble, Voices, Pads, many great organ sounds, just everything the Rockmusikerherz (I had already mentioned that before?) Pleased. What is not in stock in the well-stocked banks is easy to download (usually free of charge), the PC3K eats almost everything there was for the legendary K2000-K2661 ever. And the longer I am concerned with the peculiarities of editing, the easier and quicker it is. Actually, no problem at all.

To eliminate all remaining doubts: both devices are transported into the pro space and listen to the band set. To the right of me screams a stratocaster, left, a Les-Paul, obliquely behind me the drummer gives his best, the beer makes the carpet completely dense.

Here, the PC3K shows its incorruptible live qualities. Without turning too much at the volume control, in contrast to the Korg, the breakthrough is better, is always present without being intrusive, the sounds are useful throughout the keyboard.
The Korg walks fast in the sound carpet or mumbles to himself.
Finally the whole band agreed, PC3K7 clear before Kronos. Even our bass player, who likes to put on masses of masses and uniforms, was inspired by the PC3K7.
And another drawback of now Live is to advantage:
The important parameters are to be deciphered in the Mega-large Kronos color display. The contrasting mini-display of the Kurzweil I can (Ü-50) even without glasses to read.

As the whole then looks in the professional use, when softwarespecialists at the Korg sounds file, a room mixer and the mixer blends the best of mixing, this is not rated here.

As an amateur musician with profession and family, I want to focus on music, not programming. To my taste, in this comparison, the sound is clearly better than the Korg.

Sorry Kronos, on the other hand, you only sound like toys.

Who however value on cloth screen and color graphics, in the (home) studio on its own arrangements, the Kronos will probably be the better choice.
