Three-way monitor

Thomas80, 15.12.2015
First to the positive. The C55 has incredible power, and even at very low listening frequencies, the deepest bass is clearly and precisely audible. Its strengths are in my opinion mainly in the depth-middle down to the 40Hz region. Outstanding impulse and tight bass, as I have not heard it before - not even in enclosed cases. In fact, the tightness of the bass from the C55 seems to cause the room to be much less stimulated than with "slower" monitors.

BUT the whole does not exist in vain. Like all KS Digital Listeners I've tested so far, the noise is on the louder side. Regarding the power they can deliver is justifiable, remains with me, however, the question, who long-term so loud that the noise does not disturb. For classic productions or mastering the boxes disqualify my opinion. For "normal" rock pop productions is the noise but just still ok (have they stand at about 1.70 distance).
In the frequency response, the enthusiasm is more moderate. While the depths are somewhat more stressed, which I personally like, is missing in the critical mids around 600-1k a bit. However, the two bumps in the frequency response are quite broadbanding, so that one can with a room EQ or possibly the board-shelving filters of the boxes to body. Relatively "angular" it goes then in the high peaks and heights, if not so, that it overly strengthens. For work equipment is not necessarily the worst property, "nice" but only really good mixes. Very problematic I personally find the very "ruffled" frequency response from 2k upwards. Listening is not as bad as it looks on the analyzer - but I wonder if this can not be problematic if, for example, disturbing resonances in the material to be assessed lie precisely in a valley of the "disrupted" range and are overheard.

Regarding the "impulse scatter", the C55 are really good, the smallest details are audible and there is a very "contrast" and high-resolution sound. However, for the astonishingly in the case is not in the case with exceptionally good depth staggering. The depth gradation is good, but also no more. For rock / pop it is enough, but classical orchestral recordings are lacking in depth (even if the crunchy bass really "rocks" in orchestral recordings!). The KH 120 A which I have just for comparison in the matter of depth staggering still a proper schippe drauf. Even so, even the smallest EQ-movements are heard, the finest grades of compressor release times are audible - top! "Relative" EQing and mixing in the true sense is thus very good. Without ample AB listening with reference tracks, it is still synonymous for me to evaluate the frequency balance as a whole. Taste - things are certainly very good monitors, but as "linear" I would not rate the frequency response. "Do not paint" in any case, rather in the other direction.

The Thomann-Edition with black lacquer front plate looks really good, is however very much scratch-sensitive! The amplifiers are very warm, which is probably due to the high performance. This shows itself already with very quiet listening levels, longer loud phases I have not tested, but I have read that they are then really hot. I see uncritically at the moment, but I know that it will disturb me at the latest in the summer.
What has already bothered me with other KS digital devices is the relatively useless manual. Misunderstandings (wrong?) Hints to the installation (left and right box should have a different distance to the side walls !?). The enclosed plugs for the bass reflex openings as well as the cover caps for the setting potentiometers are not mentioned in the printed version, on the contrary, it is that the bass reflex opening must under no circumstances cover. In the online PDF with KS Digital is inserted at the same place a text box in the stands that the stoppers from the box make a closed system. Details of the exact effect on the frequency response or why / when one should do this but in vain. Unprofessional. On the features side I find the equipment for boxes in the price segment also poorly - fixed adjusted to 230V, admitted potentiators without buttons, which can only be adjusted with tools and the still ungastered. The latter is sold in the manual as a "feature", because one could adjust the more precisely as rasterized Potis ... Well. One can see one way or another - two monitors equal setting is certainly not easier. The openings for the potentiometers cause air noises at higher levels, which is why an adhesive tape strip sticks over it, which should be glued back to the potentiometer after making adjustments. Yes - "tape", for a monitor with a list price of more than 1k¤.

In conclusion, I'm still undecided whether I keep the C55, mainly because of the wild frequency response "toprum" and in terms of depth staggering, I have not the real advantages of the Coax construction in the area can not understand (similarly I was already with the D -80). The tight basses are really fun, especially at low listening levels. Noise, heat development, the very puristic settings, as well as the wild frequency response in the high-mid-range and last but not least the somewhat loveless manual tarnish the picture but something.

Real top boxes!

Steve821, 10.01.2015
I had previously experimented with various boxes from other manufacturers and ordered these boxes because of test reports and experiences of other users.

They show a very good separation sharpness in the stereo image and make all frequencies very well. Even in the basses, without a subwoofer, everything is very good.

I put it vertically, even though this may not be so.

They produce a high sound pressure if required. However, an average loudness is sufficient for small to medium sized studios.

I can recommend the boxes without if and but unconditionally.

There are, of course, more expensive boxes for the full pro fi les, which only produce nuances an audible difference. I could at least in direct comparison not much difference to boxing in two studios, which cost three to five times more.

A real recommendation for all who want to produce good recordings.
