Very, very pleasant sound quality and flexible - for bass, Git etc.

In search of a really good compressor for recording and live performances, I also came across the Keeley Compressor Pro. The requirements were as follows:
1) Primary for bass to have good feel and good sound right from the recording. Additionally for live sessions, when I play bass for a change.
2) Secondary also for electric guitar for some clean sounds and for Lakewood acoustic guitar live when I use the internal pickups
use.
3) Absolute must: Very good sound quality, ie transparent transmission of all details of the original signal, which is not the case with many effect devices and other audio devices.
4) It should be a pedal and not a rack or table compressor to keep live use simple.

My recording environment is with a SPL Crimson 3 interface, SPL GainStation and other components on a comparable quality level in the area in which differences and details are actually clearly heard.

Since I was not sure if I should not leave it with a simpler compressor pedal for bass and I actually need the full range of possibilities of Keeley, I have as a "sparring partner" the Studio Bass Compressor Pedal Seymour Duncan also ordered.

After a few tests, it became clear to me:
Although the Seymour Duncan Studio Bass has some very interesting options such as mixing the original signal with switchable frequency emphasis and also sounds quite transparent, but it reacts very strong "snappy", ie he attacked regardless of the Attack setting very aggressive all the way to a slight click sound.

Already in this regard, the Keeley Compressor Pro is in a higher league: Even extreme impact impulses are always implemented and compressed as you set it. You can set it like a hard wall - but it never shows an exaggerated life of its own. In the usual settings for bass anyway everything is fine at its best. The switch from Hard to Soft Knee allows a discreet but effective fine tuning of the sound. Soft Knee sounds a little more organic to me - but often it has to be Hard Knee.
Switching to "Auto", which switches Attack and Release from manual adjustability to internal automation, I've initially thought more of a simplification for compressor-inexperienced beginners and for live operation, if you do not have time to change many controls ,
In fact, the auto-circuit works so well that you should test them in many cases, at least as a starting position. I have found that I use about 50% of the auto-function and set attack and release only if I want to achieve something special.
The control range of the Keeley are large and they all work well over the entire range - depending of course on the type and strength of the signal source.

CONCLUSION: The Keeley Compressor Pro is not exactly cheap, but it also plays in a higher league and offers much more options than the vast majority of other compressor pedals.
It works in the demanding recording environment, but also offers everything you expect live from a good flexible (and switchable) compressor.
It covers everything you need to compress the bass signal. In addition, the control range go so far that the guitar and other instruments are covered as needed.
The LED indicator is a big plus and makes the setting much easier. The auto function is not only useful for a quick start. Otherwise, it is also worthwhile and fun to explore the many setting options.
I was looking for the hair in the soup - sonic and in the service - and found none.

DEFINITIVE

F. Javier, 14.11.2015
It is the best pedal compressor ever tested.

Of nuclear construction, it maintains at the same time a pleasant design and of professional appearance. Knobs, switches and switches of good quality.

It is a compressor that compresses, not like others you do not know very well if they compress or raise the volume a little. It is capable of compressing the signal from a subtle and soft compression while retaining dynamics, to a stable and powerful compression. The ratio reaches infinity which allows to be very aggressive in the reduction, until doing of limiter, with make up (called gain) that allows to compensate the losses of volume of suitable form. It is a compressor that can have a virtually instantaneous response Highly versatile by its controls and range of each. The GR meter is very useful. The AUTO option for the release so that you know what the guitar you play is working, it works very well.

Zero noises or buzzing when you recover the release.

The modes of use are very diverse, you can use it at the beginning of the chain to stabilize the guitar or bass, as could be for funk guitar rhythms and bass or bass slaps, or for example place it after a reverb to expand its dimension to infinity.

It gives me that this compressor can be used with any sound source, even as outboard for voices or lines in studio.

Highly recommended.
