Whilst buying this as a gift for my Double bass playing partner I "fretted" (sorry) over FL or FS. I chose the FL despite many reviews saying that the FL was too fiddly at this scale.
The U-Bass has been played constantly since Christmas and he loves it rubber strings and all. He has had no issues with it being FL, I suppose due to fretless playing with his double bass.
Great quality, the handy built in tuner is reassuring and convenient. Perfect for noodling on the sofa.
It was intended as a fun, portable practice instrument, but with the fab sound it produces when plugged into an amp, I can see it being used as a "backup" bass, as well as a novelty gigging instrument too.
We were both blown away by the quality of the sound when it was plugged in - it really exceeded expectations.
Also small enough to take away on holiday, possibly even as carry-on luggage.
All-in-all very pleased.
On-delivery, the U-Bass was well packaged and padded. Great customer service from Thomann too!
The build is solid, with attention to detail. Was set already pretty well, didn't have to adjust anything. The sound out of the instrument is pretty loud for it's size and very nice, out of preamp it's also good, clean and fairly loud. I recommend combining those two when recording. The preamp has some basic features, a tuner that mutes the signal when in use, a volume and a tone control.
If you want a bass that sounds very close to a double bass but without the fuss of a huge instrument, this would be the perfect solution. I used it pretty successful in jazz, ethnic and pop tracks.
