Very versatile overdrive
Gareth8587, 09.06.2015
The Allan Holdsworth OD / Boost is a very well made pedal. For any gigging guitarists out there I wouldn't imagine you would have a problem taking this out on stage. The footswitches appear to be rock solid and the casing of the pedal is heavy duty. The output and input jacks of the pedal line up perfectly with other MXR sized stomp boxes.

With regards to the sound - the Holdsworth OD / Boost is very, very versatile. There are two sections on this pedal - boost and overdrive. The boost has a three position toggle switch labelled F, C and T. The full is a full range boost and really thickens up the sound and gives an almost fuzz like tone depending on your amp and settings. The C is a clean boost and is very transparent and adds a volume boost without changing your tone at all. The T is a treble boost and adds a nice bit of grit to the top end of your signal. Think of Brian May and you're there.

The OD section has a toggle switch labelled L and H. The L emphasises the low mid range when the OD is engaged and the high emphasises the upper mids. I would describe the OD, when used alone, as low gain. When combined with the boost you can get a nice mid gain tone.

The overdrive is very natural and hi-fi sounding. It seems to blend well with amp distortion and sounds good into a clean amp and cascaded into other pedals too.

There is also a bass and treble controls to further tailor your sound.

The Holdsworth OD / Boost is incredibly versatile. You can use it as a standalone boost or overdrive or you can cascade the boost into the overdrive. There are a lot of options on this pedal and it should be flexible enough to be integrated into nearly any rig you can think of.

Personally, I didn't find the tone particularly Holdsworthian, but it does give an excellent rock tone.

Expensive but also very good!
tonnennfrosch, 04.06.2015
Very harmonic low / medium gain overdrive and probably the most flexible booster on the market.
Have heard countless tugs and boosters. There are also many, beautiful parts out there. None of them can do anything that this would not be able to do or even better.
Adjustments to different guitars, amps and also spatial situations are set quickly and effectively. Actually, almost every setting sounds great.
The EQ also applies the right frequencies. The sound has an enormous amount of sustain with a small amount of distortion and is firmly fixed in the room.
The possible applications are manifold.
Whether as a single crunch with booster, or even before an already pulling amp with two different sound-forming channels, everything there.
The character of the amp and guitars is always the focus.
Very musical, reserved but in detail then very spectacular.
