Ibanez WD7 Weeping Demon

Wah Wah Pedal

A Wah from Ibanez existed already more than 10 years ago. Because of its plastic case it was more a wallflower type rather than standing in the spotlight. Nevertheless its sound was convincing, and been used by Wah experts such as Frusciante.

The new Weeping Demon Wah can do a lot more: The usual foot switch operation is already known, but the auto switch function is really a fine thing: As soon as you step on the pedal, the Wah is active, you take the foot away, a spring pushes the pedal back to the "dull" starting position, at the same time deactivating the effect, with an (adjustable!) slight delay.

The pedal is particularly versatile thanks to its extensive adjustment possibilities: This allows you to fine-tune the level, frequency range and Q (known as parametric EQs and define the width of the raised range). This allows you to create very special sounds that are even reminiscent of phasing or flanging. But of course you can also follow the classics with a little patience and good hearing. Fine!

Lastly, a reference to the really successful modern design should not be missing. Luxury you can afford! Conclusion: The most versatile and controllable Wah pedal available on the market.

Versatile Wah - optically controled

Dr. Klaus, 23.02.2014
First of all, I own this wah for 6 years now, using it almost daily, it's still in perfect condition.

It's got two main functional ways to be used, selecteble by the big switch on the left. The Auto-On function selected, the effect starts, when you're moving the pedal. The pedal moves back automatically by a spring (which can be adjusted too). The other function selected, you need to hit the footswitch to activate the effect. That's useful if you want to realize fixed-wah settings.

You can also adjust Level, low frequencies, Wah-intensity ("Q"), main frequencies modulated and the auto-off-delay (the time it needs to switch off the wah-effect, if you're using the auto-on-function and you don't move the pedal anymore). The last 2 features are controlled by the tiny black pots beneath the pedal.

Though the design of the WD7 makes you think, it'd be designed for metal, it's perfect for funk, soul and rock music too.

To keep it simple, I'll give you a list of pros and cons:

+ very very flexible
+ perfect handling, auto-on-function converts even the wah-usage hating people
+ for guitar and bass
+ optically controlled, no attrition
+ very good quality (pedal itself and sound)

- quite heavy
- quite big

The Daddy of all wah-wahs

Louie Louie, 04.09.2015
There are a few "legendary" wah pedals on the market which became famous because certain people used them on certain classics a long time ago. Each of these pedals had their own personality and, indeed, their own temperamentality. For example, they tended to only sound good with a certain guitar and amp at a certain volume. Otherwise they were too weedy or too distorted. If you were lucky, you might get even one whose components had been assembled correctly.
Then the designers at Ibanez decided to sit down and build a wah pedal from scratch and make it so that it could do absolutely everything that a wah pedal should do and have. Namely:
- Feature a separate, stampable on/off switch.
- Also offer a spring loaded return pedal function with automatic on/off activation
- An adjustable Q width - from swell to quack!
- An adjustable Q range - in the lows, mids or highs.
- An adjustable Q height - how loud to quack!
- Be quiet!
- Finally, be made strong enough for a bus to drive over.
And, because they're Ibanez, of course they did it. They gave it a slightly similar name to a certain very famous pedal, but never mind. I've played professionally for over 30 years and I've had this wah pedal for the last 10 of them. It's the only one I will ever need again from a sound point of view. From a longevity point of view, I've no doubt it will last longer than I do.

It would be fair to say that the development of the wah-wah pedal has been somewhat experimental over the years.
