An undiscovered little gem

Hugh Höfner, 12.07.2017
Received deliver of this today and was mightily impressed, both with the bass and the delivery service which was excellent.
Pros - its size , it's dynamic range of sounds, price
Cons - none , can't fault it.
Plugging in I was very pleased with the sound. Played it through my CUBE amp and found it was very controllable. The sound from the single pick up was very nice both in bright slap and darker muted tones. Drove well through the amp. Effects such as chorus and distorsion are just lovely and very dirty ?? (which is a good thing ). Very versatile tool.
Full size neck means an easy transition to full size base with no loss of muscle skill from your left hand.
Short body makes it easy to get your hand closer to the nut for trickery riffs. It's size means it is best played sitting on a couch or if standing with a strap with strap locks as the physics of its construct require this... a brilliant bass and portable ! Suitable for students and performance.

A perfectible but sympathetic travel bass

This bass has two main defects but it is strangely endearing:

-The strings are rough and look like cardboard.
I changed to Daddario in short scale, it's perfect.

-The head plunges because the geometry of the bass causes the center of inertia to be at the level of the fixation of the handle. The strap fastening on the handle side being too close to this point, the imbalance is inevitable. One can hang a strap at the head of the bass or weigh down the body with a bottle of water hung at the back but it is not my thing then I tinkered a removable top notch (to keep the travel aspect ) Which moves the hook point and rebalances the bass. I also weighted the body with 150g of lead balls under the pickguard. Now, it's perfect in terms of playability but you have to be a handyman.

The handle is fast and comfortable.
The mechanics hold the tuning, we will see how they age.
The microphone is not monstrous but enough for what I want to do (travel training). It's not a bass group or studio.
The potentiometers do the job, a volume and a simple tone.
Same for the easel which is quite massive. The tuning of the intonation was a bit capricious but once in place, it's OK.

The finishes are clean but perfectible.
Under the straps, you will find rubber washers instead of felt washers.
The jack plug seems fragile but holds well, tighten the screws.
The paint is clean, the body of the bass and the handle seems good, but the set needs an integral lutherie treatment, the kind that will cost you 100 to 200¤ unless you know how to do it.

I completely disassembled the instrument and took care of the handle. The frets were yellow and slightly oxidized. The rosewood fingerboard was dull. After treatment, it is found that the frets are very shiny and the wood pleasant to look at.

It will be necessary to adjust the truss rod, the action, the intonation and the height of the microphone, which is normally done when buying an instrument anyway.

Once you get there, you'll have a completely different instrument, fun and enjoyable to use.
I do not regret this purchase but you must know why you buy it.
If I had to keep one word to define it: Potential.
Because this bizarre bass and at the same time endearing is very easily customizable.
