A.A.R., 27.04.2018
To use the instrument: Although always public, I mainly play for my own pleasure.
The worst first:
The ceiling does not match the quality shown on the product photo. The grain is wider and there are scratches on the ceiling, probably handling and grinding marks. Another instrument, which I have looked at for comparison, was even worse in this regard. The soundhole rosette is not inserted as clean as it should be. There is a fine gap between the frame and the binding on the upper frame to the ceiling near the neck - probably a relic of the binding and frame work when small wood chips are used.
At the Binding are also some small depressions to find. Probably also due to grinding work.
The jack in the Endpin is a bit stiff.
The positive:
Back and sides are beautifully grained. The feel of the extraordinary wood and how it is treated is very pleasant. The slightly curved bridge, bridge pad and pins are clean, as well as the string guide and the height adjustment.
The neck, both in strength, shaping and paint, is easy to grip. The fingerboard has mass and is impeccable, as well as the Bundierung. The saddle fits and the string guide is common.
Noteworthy is the slotted headstock. Good work. The strings are free to the tuners and are nowhere on the top plate. The mechanics work clean and without significant play.
The most important:
The sound character has convinced me. From the corpus derived from the classical form, he has something very own. I would call him warm. I wanted something like that, which is closer to the sound of a tight classical or flamenco guitar. That of course the choice of strings plays a big role, I do not need to do extra. Currently the factory 12er are on it. Next up, I'm going to raise Daddario Nickel Bronze, which still favor a soft sound. The ceiling, perhaps just because of their slightly above-mentioned grain (as is often the case with Adirondack blankets) produces this pleasant roundness of sound. Or is it the laurel wood of the corpus? Or the atypical verbalization of the ceiling? Or the thermal treatment of the wood? Probably it's all in the composite! In any case, the warm feel of the instrument corresponds to the sound it produces. The address is sensitive, which you can already feel on the tremolo ability on the 1st and 2nd fret, for example. Depending on the attack, a nice modulation of the sound is possible. Plectrum, fingers, just thumbs: a lot can be made out. Everything is possible and everything has its charm. Of course, too, aggressive. I would never want to commit myself to the question anyway: "What kind of music is a guitar good for?" She's good for what you take her for.
The fact that "amplification" is possible (for example, I play via an AER Domino) extends the spectrum. If you then combine it with an iRig Acoustic Stage and its possibilities, you have endless to discover. But that is another field and goes beyond such a judgment.
Conclusion: That the negative mentioned above could not persuade me to return the instrument, is due to the other beauty of the instrument (I should call it? Vintage? Term is already too worn, I think), at its extraordinary appearance (really a successful new concept by Höfner), but especially by the sound. Body, neck: The sound is not only audible, but also noticeable, as it must be.
Nevertheless, more care in the production would be quite desirable and only the instrument would do justice to, without the price to endless. Because its qualities are very good.
That for about 1000, - ¤ no suitcase is (unlike in a trade journal announced), can get over. An adhesive transparent pickguard is attached. It is a pity, however, for the missed opportunity to create a perfect instrument in every respect.
