Worth the risk?!
Mike1989, 20.01.2019
As a general rule of thumb, I NEVER blind buy guitars. I?m sure you?ve all been there - seen a guitar you like the look of, maybe heard good reviews etc and gone to try it out, and for whatever reason you just don?t love it. It?s not for you. So spending my hard earned money on something I haven?t tried is generally a big no.

On this occasion however (after being pointed in the direction of Harley Benton guitars by someone I was buying a second hand amplifier from), I stumbled across the SC-Custom VB and instantly fell in love with the look of it. I then spent hours reading the reviews for this guitar and all the other HB models to try and get a feel for it, but people either seemed to love them or hate them, so I was going to have to take a chance. Boy am I glad I did.

First of all I would like to clarify - this is not a 5 star guitar (let's not get too carried away). It is a 5 star <£200 guitar. By a country mile. Overall points:
? Looks: Sublime. Great finish, gold hardware looks wonderful and the whole ?look? just really works.
? Sound: Pretty darn good. Bridge pickup is bright and just the right amount of hot - sounds awesome for crunchy tones. Neck Pickup is meaty and toneful and sounds great overall - but maybe does get a little muddy when using high gain. Paired up they sound good too (might actually be my favourite of the 3!).
? Feel: Decent weight to the guitar, feels sturdy and well put together. The fretboard is a tiny bit dry but still more than playable (easily remedied). Out of the box the set up of mine was good - nice low action and intonation is perfect. Absolutely nothing feels cheap.

This guitar would suit anyone who wants a nice sounding, modern ?LP? style guitar that is an absolute steal at that price, or for anyone who wants a guitar to mod as for the price I don?t think you can get anything else that looks and feels as good. Is it for the gigging/recording/professional musician? Probably not (I will definitely be gigging with it in fairness - it looks too good not to), but I don?t think that is who this guitar is aimed at.

Would I recommend this? Absolutely. Will I be buying more HB guitars? Absolutely. Great service from Thomann too. An all round success.

Doesn't cut it for high gain, in contrary to how it's portrayed.

This guitar is definitely a banger for the buck, but there are issues with it, and even though this instrument is cheap, they're not justifiable.

What i like about this instrument: it looks nice, the matte finish is smooth and nice to touch. Neck is stunningly awesome, very comfortable to play on and frets were polished well. That's about it.

What i don't like about this instrument: the bridge has rust in the section where you adjust the saddles. Tuners act smoothly but they are far from the best, don't hold the guitar in tune for as long as one could desire. The upper bridge is just bad, strings don't even exactly fit the holes in there, strongly recommend replacing it asap or widen the holes in it on your own if you have the right instrument, because the way it came, the guitar would detune very fast during playing, not by big margin, but enough for you to notice. The pickup switch is wobbly, just don't feel right, but anyway serves it's purpose, i just hope it won't break. The guitar came with lots of dirt on it, everywhere, it's not really an instrument issue, but it is an issue related to what condition it was manufactured and kept in.

THE BIGGEST ISSUES:
SUSTAIN DOESN'T EXIST in this guitar, it has ZERO acoustic resonance, and this guitar is supposed to be a single-cut, seriously, three seconds and most of it is gone, it's awful even for a cheap instrument, this will prevent this instrument from producing a good sound even if you replace the pickups.
And the pickups themselves... Well, it is to be expected of a cheap instrument, but they really are trash, they are muddy, they pick up some weird ultra high frequencies and also some upper low end, they are noticeable and that isn't exactly a good characteristic for a pickup. Good luck playing high gain rock or metal on this guitar, due to the muddiness in pickups, forget about rhythm parts, chords become too muffled and it's unbearable. And as i mentioned abode, replacing them will do you only so much good, because even though better pickups will clear out all that mud, lack of sustain won't exactly let you benefit a lot from them.
So the only good tones you can get with this guitar are clean, using single coil mode. But i didn't buy this guitar for clean, and neither should you, better get a cheap strat for cleans.
To sum it up, i am not fond of the concept of justifying an instrument drawbacks by it's low price. Price doesn't correlate with quality as much as most would like to think, i've seen a lot of bad instruments that cost ten times more than this guitar, and i've also seen cheap instruments that cost around the same as this guitar and they were noticeably better (at least they had sustain and stayed in tune). This guitars has drawbacks and they do ruin the fun you could get out of playing it.

For whom i'd recommend this guitar: if you are looking for a guitar strictly for practice and you don't mind the mud in the pickups that will ruin high gain for you, go ahead.
For whom i'd recommend to stay away from this guitar: for anyone who is looking for an instrument that will sound good and will be suitable not only for practice, but also for recording, gigging, and other purposes.
