Oops! You did it again!

I bought the 12 string a couple of weeks ago and was so impressed I went out and bought this one!

The main reason I was allowed to buy it was because my wife liked the colour!

Many people talk about classic 60s LP guitars but believe me this is superior in every way to one of those old relics and I was around in those days.

The neck is much faster than the originals in that it's thinner and is less than a true "C" shape. It strikes me that if in doubt guitar builders call it C no matter what the shape.

The tuners hold well and without any action on my part the intonation is perfect on everything but the A string and even that is close enough to be unnoticeable most of the time.

The pickups are fine and I would describe the neck as mellow rather than muddy. I love the single tone control and it sounded great through my Marshall with overdrive in all pickup positions. Plenty of sustain to carry my old fingers through the runs and riffs and all in all a really good guitar.

The switching between humbucker and single coil works really well and the change is much more noticeable on this compared with another guitar I own which has Seymour Duncan's on board. Needless to say the pups are good in both modes but it might have been fun to be able to phase them.

Finish is excellent apart from a couple of dark marks in the binding on the neck which I had to examine really closely to find. Yes it could have MOP or abalone markers on the neck but these would just add to the cost and are unnecessary. The guitar looks stunning and I know it's not a 9 mm flamed maple top but this does not detract from its appearance and hopefully only time will tell what the wear characteristics are like. Fortunately the guitar does not have a cheap pickguard which would only detract from its value and appearance.

My next move will be to restring with 8s to see if the greatness is sustained on the lighter units.

I am incredibly impressed that such a good guitar can be sold at this ridiculous price and can only suggest that anyone looking for a reasonably priced guitar just jumps in and buys one.

Not for beginners

I waited for a few weeks before writing this review, so I could give an actual review, not just a first impression. I bought it to practice and teach repair skills on and just to play. I guess you could call me a non-professional guitar tech.

Pros: Sounds great, honestly, for the money I doubt you'll get something better sounding. It also looks stunning. Decent tuners (not locking though), stays in tune well.

Cons: First of all, at this price range you will never get perfection. The reason I say it's not for beginners, is that you need to be able to do a full setup because HB QC is not very consistent.
When it arrived it was almost in tune and played fine, not great. I noticed the bridge was ridiculously high and the fretboard felt grimey and bending strings felt like moving the string against a cheese grater. Action was a little high for my taste but within specs. Fret ends were fine. So I adjusted the truss rod, lowered the bridge, cleaned the fretboard, polished the frets, fine-tuned action, intonated. I do still have a little bit of fret buzz so I'm going to level them at the next string change.

Pickups (Roswell) are surprisingly good but a bit muddy. In my opinion this has little to do with the pickups but more with the electronics which are of the cheap kind.
The volume and tone buttons are a bit skewed, because the top is arched and this was not compensated.
The backplates could be recessed better. I needed to remove a lot of excess glue inside as well.
Looks like shielding paint on the inside by the way.
The pickup switch was very loose, this is because the pin inside was too short and thus only secured on one side. Made a new pin and now it feels sturdy.

Summary: If you’re like me you’re going to have a fun project in these guitars and will end up with a guitar that looks, feels and sounds like a high end guitar. I would have gladly sacrificed the maple veneer for better detailing though. I will be replacing the electronics and maybe the pickups. Maybe even the tune-o-matic.
That being said, it has now become one of my favorite guitars and has been officially added to my personal collection.
