Big box, nice sound

25.03.2014
The first thing that struck me about the Harley Benton HBW-150 was that it is surprisingly large for a 15" bass combo. Not "huge", but a bit larger than I was expecting, particularly the depth (front to back). However it is still quite easy to move around as it is reasonably light with very sturdy handles either side. There is also a handle on top which is convenient if you need to move it a short way on stage while wearing your bass. Carrying it up one flight of stairs or loading into a car is no problem for one person. For two people, the side handles make it dead easy to carry, though (to be picky) the balance is a little off-centre.

At 150 watts it is not massively powerful. It's not going to be mistaken for an Earthquake, though if used at home as a practice amp it may rattle the windows. On stage in a busy pub, next to a loud rock drummer, I could hear it (hooray - the main reason for buying it). There is a 1/4" jack pre-amp output on the back which can be plugged into a PA (or an additional bass amp) for more front of house sound.

On its own it is probably not quite loud enough for a pub rock band, but more than adequate for folk or light jazz. It would have been nice to have an XLR pre-amp out, but the 1/4" jack is adequate.

Also on the back are 1/4" jack sockets for effect loop out, effect loop in, and "amp" in. (I've not used these as yet).

Controls are all easily accessed from the front, with the usual gain, bass, mid, treble and volume and a switch for passive or active pickups. It also has a useful 7-band graphic EQ. The controls are very slightly recessed, but look a bit vulnerable to knocks so I'll be strapping a piece of plywood to the front as protection during transportation. The knobs all look a bit cheap on close inspection (what do you expect at this price) but are functional and look good from a distance.

Regarding the all important sound:
When played on its own, there seems to be a bit of a rattle coming from somewhere. It's not a particularly bad rattle and it's completely inaudible in a band context. Other than that the sound is satisfyingly rich, with plenty of tonal shaping available thanks to the comprehensive equalization and tone controls. Personally I like a bit of "edge" to my bass sound, which it does quite nicely. For those that prefer a smooth rounded sound, it can do that too. The big box certainly helps to give depth to the sound without boominess.

The sound via the the pre-amp out is good., requiring minimal EQ on the desk and no noticeable hum or hiss.

As a practice amp, this would do very nicely as long as space is not an issue.

On stage it works great as a bass monitor and may be loud enough on its own for small gigs or quieter bands. For bigger/louder gigs you will almost certainly need additional amplification, which can be conveniently accomplished via the 1/4" pre-amp out. If used regularly on the road, care will be needed to avoid knocks to the front controls, but the speaker grill and general construction appear to be nice and sturdy without being overly heavy.

As always, price and delivery from Thomann were excellent. At just under £150 GBP it is very good value for money.

A great amp for the money!!

06.04.2016
What can i say, I'm over the moon with this amp. At first i was skeptical that the Harley Benton brand would be any good as i heard a few horror storys online. this opinion has completely changed since all the gear that i've purchased made my these guys is top notch.

overall the sound quality isn't amazing but its great for the price you pay. ive played ad-least 50 gigs now with this amp and it has not let me down not to mention the number of times it was used as a speaker for long periods of time.

The EQs are the standard 3 high, mids and bass which allow you access to some great tones coupled with a boost switch you can get some real growl out of this amp. the 7 band EQ works great for bringing through the mids and rolling back a bit of the lows and highs as i like in my bass tone. its the fine adjustments that make the difference! it even has a stand by mode that it enters after a number of minutes of no use.

Its a great amp for the price doesn't weigh to much ether and is a fairly movable in size!
