Extreme value for money!
20.01.2016
This isn't my first Harley Benton instrument so I already had an idea about the quality, especially of the upper tier of HB instruments, but still, a guitar that good for such little money never ceases to surprise!

I've bee playing for more than 15 years and, compared to my early days, these new cheap guitars are light years ahead in terms of build quality, features and quality control. And since HB is Thomann's in-house brand, you get a lot more bang for your buck!

First off, the guitar is stunning. Simply beautiful and built extremely well. Finish is nice and smooth everywhere. I've looked thoroughly but could not find runs, hairs or any imperfections in the finish whatsoever.
It is also put together excellently. There are no crooked or loose screws, no gaps anywhere, no badly cut plastics, everything is just smooth and nice.

The hardware's really good, as well. The bridge, while not extremely substantial, is really solid and works well. Same goes for the tuners. Solid, steady and smoothly progressive. Combined with a perfectly cut nut, the guitar just needs a tune and it's ready to play.
The action can get ridiculously low without buzzing, dead frets and the such.
The pots are equally good. Nothing extremely fancy, granted, but functional and solid.
Only con I found was a slightly higher fret, nothing a couple of taps with a hammer can't solve!

Sound is also very nice. The Wilkinson pickups are spot on on that classic rock crunch and work well in any situation. Of course, rock and metal are in its wheelhouse but you can get some pretty full, round cleans as well. Not bad!
If I could gripe on about one thing, that would be the 24 frets that place the neck pickup closer to the bridge and the difference in tone isn't that drastic. But that's just nitpicking, to be honest.

Summing up, this is a beautiful guitar for very little money and I can't really find a single thing wrong with it. It's a highly recommended buy, worth every penny! For beginners and... financially challenged pros alike!

Great buy - If you're hesitating, don't!
Conn, 09.09.2018
I doubt you'll find greater quality in a guitar in this price range - a short disclaimer, I never leave a review unless I am stunned with a product.

First, the features, Grover locking tuners and a graphtech nut lend superbly to this guitar's tuning stability, the guitar was shipped in only around 7 business days - being in New Zealand, that's stunning! The guitar arrived in tune from a summer country into one that is 9 degrees C, which says a lot about how stable it feels, the hardware is a nice gold colour, complementing the white, and looks a tinge off the darker colour id want - which is more like what the tuners exhibit, but I guess it will age in time, as for its construction, both the bridge and t-o-m style bar feel very robust. Feels like a real instrument.

Sound: this thing is very playable, a thinner neck than I expected slightly thicker than what a JEM would have, came in set a little too low in the action which caused some tiny buzzing , but no dead spots, and perfect intonation, nothing to complain about there. The roswell pickups are a step above the usual OEM pickups you'd find on something else in this price range, as well as the fact it was shipped with D'Darrios sweetening the deal.

Electronics: the pickups were described above but the potentiometers and the switch feel solid, the jack was a little tight but that has been remedied after a few ins-n-outs .

Neck: I always think the most important part of a guitar is the neck - if it's impossible to play then why bother, this guitar's neck came shipped with the newer roseacer fretboard and it seems to be a step up over what I understand were 'ebonol' fretboards, the wood feels robust and looks almost ebony-like with its darkness, a definite plus. The wood feels a little dry and like it needs rehydration with some oil, but otherwise it's awesome. There are smudge marks from the factory up and down the binding but a few passes with a fingernail managed to clean most of them off.
The fretwork - for a guitar in this range- is absolutely stunning, I've played 1000 dollar guitars that didn't have fretwork comparable to this guitar, up and down the neck is a breeze. The 13" radius is something to get accustomed to but after a while is perfectly fine. Lastly the inlays are a type of synthetic material, however usually on these budget models (like my Epi LP) they're a bright and shiny obviously plastic looking material, on this DC Custom they're kind of like an aged abalone look, which really adds to the classiness of the gold and white.
As for the cons.
There were a few blemishes, small errors in the 'binding' and a corruption of the rhombus decal, but overall this guitar is stunning value for the money , and I'd rock it anywhere, the pickups may have to go in the future but there's no rush, there's also an issue with the neck adapting to my climate, as the truss rod does not want to move at all, either this is something that will loosen over time or it's overtightened and un-useable, let's hope it's the former!

Thanks for the quality guitar, Thomann!
Big shout out to my contact; Aleksejs Lisovecs who was prompt in replying to assuage my fears on the shipping time - which turned out to be faster than average anyway.

Cant believe it only cost ¤170
24.12.2015
I was kinda buying blind on this one as there wasn't any reviews on this guitar when I bought it.
But I am so glad I did, this guitar is simply amazing. Especially when you consider it only cost me ¤170. It comes with quality hardware (tuners, pots, nut, pickups etc..) and there was no issues with the finish. I love the new asymetrical body shape. It sounds great, especially with some gain handy. Very comfortable to play and it even came setup properly out of the box. And for such a cheap guitar I cant believe they bothered to put D'addarios on it (My string of choice). If your in the market for an SG or Viper style guitar, defintely give this a try first. Now I wanna get the SC custom because the of the quality of this guitar. The only thing you need to consider before buying is this guitar is neck heavy (but thats an SG thing anyway) and it's 24 frets (which takes at bit of getting used to).

Great For The Money
21.06.2016
Received the guitar today in good time. The packing was sufficient that coming throughfrom Germany to Spain to the Canary Islands no problems occurred with the instrument inside or the outer box. The CONS first were, the fret ends are pretty sharp on both the treble and bass sides and will need to be dressed, the additional frets on this model don't offer me more playability and I personally would prefer just 22 to the 24. The biggest con for me was that the old HB SG models had the same profile as the Gibson and Epiphone SGs whereas the new models all have the extended top bout and the strap button is on the back of the top horn which I had assumed to be designed to aid the pivotal position to help with neck heaviness. However, having played the guitar it actually works the opposite way and renders the instrument for me unplayable in a standing position as it is the most neck heavy guitar I have ever played in my long musical career. I would reckon the design now owes more to the pressures from Gibson than improvement. For my own comfort I will change the button to the neck to body join and may use a strap I have that sits over both shoulders.

The PROS are really easy to evaluate as the guitar plays and sounds really nice, way better than you would expect at this price point. Their are blemishes in the finish but nothing major and certainly not a deal breaker. I'm OK with both four and two pot, double pickup, guitars but some people may find the two pot control layout easier to use live. I say this sincerely as having owned and gigged some very expensive guitars during the past few decades I would be totally happy gigging this guitar, once I fix the playing position issue. This is not a beginners instrument as with a change of balance point and some light neck work it is a suitably good looking and sounding guitar to gig! Get back to the equal horn size and position and you have a major winner at an incredible price Thomann.

Amazed!
28.11.2016
Amazed at the quality of this guitar for the money, I have spent alot more on other brands of guitars in this bracket and have been disappointed but not in this case. How Thomann do this for the money is nuts, this will not be my last Harley Benton. Thanks Thomann.
