Black beauty

Wrapped in a deep black dress, the Harley Benton CLD-341SC BK Custom Line is not only a tool to make music with, but a thing of beauty, a sculpture made of wood and metal. Such an instrument should definitely not be tucked away in some quiet little room: It deserves to be seen, preferably on the stage. That is where it belongs, under the spotlight. And thanks to its practical features, which include a cutaway and a pickup system, the CLD-341SC BK will ensure that all eyes are firmly on you!

Convincing inside and out

More than just a pretty face, the Harley Benton CLD-341SC BK Custom Line is a high-class, professional instrument. It has a body made out of laminated maple, which is adorned with a solid cedar top and reinforced with X-bracing. The mahogany neck features a hard, dark-coloured pau ferro fingerboard with 20 frets and a scale length of 64.4 centimetres (25.35"). The nut width of 42.5 millimetres (1.67") provides the perfect balance between handling and space. The pickup system is also top-notch: The Fishman Flex Plus-T is discreetly set into the frame, but still offers full operation. You get controls for volume, bass, and treble - and even a tuner!

Convincing sound

In terms of price, the CLD-341SC BK Custom Line is aimed at the advanced guitarist who knows what they want - or the ambitious beginner with a sense of style. And while the guitar is ideal for the stage due to its striking appearance, it is equally at home in the rehearsal room and in the studio. The solid cedar top adds plenty of character and dynamics to the tone. Cedar tends to emphasise the mid frequencies more than spruce, which makes it sit well in a group setting, even when unplugged. At the same time, the reduced highs prevent the sound on stage from getting spoiled by the dreaded “out-of-control feedback”.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Make your mark

The Harley Benton CLD-341SC BK Custom does two things best of all: The first is chordal playing, and the second is looking unashamedly good. For this reason, you will primarily find it where accompaniment is the order of the day (as funny as that may sound). Singer/songwriters, street musicians, and of course on-stage professionals will all enjoy playing and writing on this guitar (this means you, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash fans!) thanks to its precise, punchy rhythm sound with excellent mid emphasis. On stage, the Fishman electronics, complete with EQ controls and tuner, give you optimum control not only of your sound, but also of your tuning.

However do I rate this flawed diamond?

I decided on this guitar as I wanted a top spec black guitar. A couple of reviews were not that positive but this was one of Harley Benton's finest and exactly what I wanted.
Out of the box it looked beautiful. I mean really stunning. I didn't like the pic guard and it didn't match the beauty of the rest. But honestly I can handle it.

I played a gig with it that night. Wow. The sound was amazing though my pa. It was alive. Also unplugged it is so wonderful. Loads commented.

However, there were a couple of problems. The nut was cut terribly and the frets really sharp. One fret actually cut my finger.

I've seen loads of Harley Benton reviews and so many say that QC is an issue. Solve this issue and you'll win. I am sure Thomann get loads back. But, they are not getting mine sent back. Why? Because the sound is so exquisite. I'm going to pay someone locally to repair it.

This guitar rings beautifully all over the fret board. Even with a cut finger and a future bill from a local guitar tech, this was a wonderful purchase.
