An iconic Les Paul Custom

James2603, 26.05.2014
I took delivery of my Les Paul PF Signature in 2010 and I couldn't put into words how stunning it really is. The finish is a beautiful, mile-deep, highly polished, sweet-smelling lustrous black, accentuated by it's arched mahogany body and I was surprised just how fast and effortless the neck is to play. The genuine mother of pearl block inlays and ivory edge binding is a sight to behold and really sets the guitar off like no other in the world.
It is truly a work of art and could rightly adorn any wall as such!
thomann's service was also excellent overall.
The middle pickup is always switched on, so by switching between the neck, centre and bridge pickups with the pickup selector, you are either in neck/middle, all three pickups together, or bridge/middle, and you can blend each of these combinations using the two volume and two tone pots.
As a metal lead guitar player, I would personally have preferred to be able to isolate the bridge pickup for more attack, similar to the traditional Les Pauls, but I'm sure most Les Paul players will love the way this guitar is set up for other styles.

A couple of minor criticisms :

Firstly; There seems to be a certain degree of hum from the pickups and I have noticed other Les Paul PF signature owners have commented on this too in the past. As an example, I have Dimarzio pickups fitted to another guitar and they are virtually silent in comparison through a high gain amp. -Come on Gibson!, this is such an easy problem to sort out in this day and age!
For this reason I have to take a star away for it's sound.

Secondly, (and this is nothing to do with the guitar's quality), the guitar was not set up properly by the Gibson factory or thomann and the guitar greatly lacked sustain out of the box, particularly on high notes at the top of the neck. This for me is the whole point of a Gibson Les Paul, as they are renowned for their excellent sustain and playability, so I had to get the guitar professionally set up by my local guitar shop and Les Paul specialist in London in order to rectify it, which was a bit irritating considering the guitar's cost.
However, having had the work done I am now delighted to say that this Les Paul is AMAZING and plays like a high-end Les Paul should!

If you do take the plunge and buy one of these Les Pauls, you will not regret it and you will certainly never want to sell it!!!

Great guitar, sound wise it's an animal with sustain a plenty. Don't like the strings but once changed the super slim neck meant the notes rolled off the tretboard. I love my Albert Collins Tele but this comes a close second, and that's coming rrom someone who's always loved Fenders ratjer than Gibsons. All in all, love it.
