ES355 tone in Les Paul size.

Martin7995, 11.02.2015
When I first saw this guitar I was surprised about several things. Some are already listed in ads and reports, others not. First amazing thing is about size and, especially, weight. The guitar is small and very, very lightweight. This makes the guitar to look like a toy when you first handles her. Wrong. She is not a toy. It took to me about 20 minutes playing to get used, and now then I think I will keep aside my 335 and play her rarely. This 390 is the most comfortable guitar I have ever played!
Second thing is how resonant she is. I can play unplugged and she sounds like a much bigger archtop. Almost like a acoustic flattop. I have a 335 and a 135 and none of those bigger guitars match the level of this little one.
Third surprising thing is the binding. It is not cream... it is strongly orange! I don't know if this happens on my particular guitar or all 390 but bindings do have a strong orange cast. Weird. Anyway this is not bad looking at all, just surprising.

The guitar needed a setup to adjust truss rod and intonation, etc. This is quite normal on brand new guitars. After that played well.

Bad points: Finishings quality of Gibson is no longer what it used to be. This is not supposed to be a top notch guitar, but anyway something over 2000EUR should take more attention to details. There are some small defects on coating, the bindings sometimes are not totally straight and overall the "look" of the guitar is sort of a cheaper one. This is not Thomann fault, but Gibson. And not only about this model. Another weird point is, Gibson does not state clearly whatever this is actually a custom shop guitar or not. In the companion flyer, it talks about the guitar as being custom shop, but there is no other place where you can find any clue. This is not important at all, but part of the charm if having a genuine Gibson is the "custom shop" status of your guitar.

Now for the good points: When you plug the guitar you fast forgot all the finishings defects. The tone is amazing! is like a 335 or a 330, *much* better then a 339. It sounds "hollow" and "resonant". Mini humbs does a great job. This is probably one of the best sounding guitars I have. And I have many.

Another great point is how comfortable this guitar is. Regarding my 335, I am a little bit disappointed on the ability of "body dive" when playing unstrapped. The 390 is a quite different story, The 390 is very well balanced. You can play sitted, without strap and it remains in its place. This is really great.

So, bottom line, this is a great sounding guitar. Lightweight, great for gigs. Tone is very 335-ish, without all the big body and weight of a true 335. IMHO better that a 339, but this is a matter of taste. There are some issues in the finishing, as neatly all current Gibsons. Overall I think it is one of the best models Gibson currently have. My recommendation: Go for her, this guitar passes the test,

Finally, Thomann did a great job. I ordered this guitar as replacement for a defective one, from other brand (I will not say which brand ;-D ), Thomann was very helpful, in few days I got this little beauty at home, with no problems!
