Elegant simplicity- pleasing tone

Douglas C., 06.03.2015
I tried a Furch OM 22 SR a couple of years ago and was very impressed. This led me to consider the Furch G 22 SR, a slightly larger bodied instrument.

Normally I would always advise anyone purchasing an instrument of any value to try it first but I decided to take a punt on ordering from Thomann, based on:

1) my experience with the Furch OM,
2) my understanding of Furch's production values and consistency of manufacture but accepting no two pieces of wood are the same,
3) the fact that these instruments are rare in local music shops,
4) the no-nonsense returns policy offered by Thomann.
5) the price being competitive due to Sterling being at a seven year high against the Euro.

As usual the instrument arrived well packaged, although it was delivered to a neighbour when I noted in my order only to deliver to my home address. Fortunately our neighbours are friendly! Inspecting the instrument I could not find a single manufacturing flaw. Every junction of materials and timbers is perfectly executed. If I was being very critical the matching of the colour of the two-piece mahogany neck at the heel could have been closer and there is a light patch on the ebony fret board but I suppose wood is a natural product! The Schaller tuners are perhaps a little more vague than the Gotoh's of my other instruments but they seem to work OK at the moment.

The guitar had, as one would expect, been tuned down a tone for the trip. While tuning it up I immediately sensed the resonance of the top and the first sounds were good, actually a lot better than I had hoped. String balance is good and it seems to fingerpick and strum well with the slightly deeper bottom end I was looking for but with the sparkly highs I am used to from my current OM. It seems a slightly more scooped frequency range across the strings, which was exactly what I was looking for. This instrument was manufactured on 9 January 2015 and time will tell how well the tone matures. Indeed you can still smell the wood glue!

Action is currently set a little high for me but that will be sorted with a straightforward set up at my local guitar shop. I thought the 45mm nut might be an issue when I am more used to 43mm but the neck profile is comfortable.

The spruce top is well matched with quite a tight grain and lots of silking. The rosewood has a straightforward figuring and is nothing to write home about. Visually the instrument has an elegant simplicity and beauty, but the star of the show is the pleasing tone which will hopefully continue to mature in years to come.

So far as bang for buck goes this instrument will take a lot of beating. It doesn't have the high end appointments or timbers but I wanted a working guitar, not a show piece.

Good instrument for a good price

04.11.2015
After I tried many guitar guitars and guitars in Hamburg, I was sure it should be a Furch. Since Thomann had interesting models for me, I was at Thomann in Treppendorf and I played several guitars from Furch and a Maton in comparison. The result: Furch simply builds good guitars for a top price.
It does not have a pickup, but I have an LR Baggs Anthem installed, with which I have good experience. Thus, the guitar is portable.

Positive:
The Furch G22-SR is equally suitable for fingerpicking and for strumming. The 22 series of solid spruce and rosewood has a Dreadnought and an OM version. The Grand Auditorium, for which I have chosen, is a good compromise from volume (The Maton has quite sunk), bass, clear treble and handiness. In addition, the guitar sounds very differentiated, which is noticeable in the Melodiespiel. It has a somewhat more metallic sound, which I like quite well, through the Graph Tech Bridge (compensated). This can however be replaced, if necessary, by a bone bridge insert.

Negatives:
The problem at the beginning was that the strings snapped when I unpacked them at home, probably because of the climate change. I have searched for a long time and found nothing. After the Thomann customer service sent again to the manufacturer service, with which no deficiencies were found, they came back after slight adjustment of the frets with reduced but still annoying snarl. So I went on my own quest.
The bridge is already very high I had to grind a little. (The neck screw can not regulate everything) When I then adjusted the neck again, I have now reached a more comfortable string position and it does not snarl any more. In general, with a louder instrument, ALL the noises are louder, ie the noise that always occurs. But this can not be ascribed to the instrument, but only to its technique,

All in one: Well, the instrument is worth every single cent and I play since then every day =) At the next CD recording, it will also perform well, I'm sure!

I hope this could help a little. If you have the opportunity, go to Treppendorf. Very nice customer consultants and over a thousand guitars in one room =)
