A pair of glasses for the ears

Würzgnom, 01.11.2009
I've been involved with recording for about 10 years, made some recordings for my own bands and also produced demos for several other bands, style in the metal, rock, punk to pop.

Like most of the homerecorders, I've also made a development as far as the equipment is concerned. My first monitoring monitors were Samson Resolv 80a, which by the way did not bring me much, because I could not mix with those. The low bass range could not be judged very well, at the heights one never really noticed, where the border between Brilliant and Schrill runs. The lowlands could cheerfully merge in front of you and you have noticed it only on other plants.

I then saddled and bought me passive event PSP8. These were the first boxes, with which I relatively well a balanced frequency balance got hold. But although I got along very well with the event, I always felt that there was still a dimension of detail missing.

After some (almost euphoric) reviews on the Internet, I became curious about the Focal Twin and ordered it. (Yes, I have influenced me ;-))

One speaker came on Fridays, the other only on Monday. So I have only once run the one speaker. Why am I telling this? Refer to the operating instructions of the loudspeakers to ensure that the loudspeakers have to run for a while before they sound properly. I would have thought something like this before for Humbug, but a sound comparison on Monday taught me a better one: The loudspeaker, which came on Monday sounded distinctly different than the other, just in the bass range the differences were extreme. At first, the speakers have relatively little bass, only when the edges of the loudspeakers have softened, the abundance comes down. This may take several days.

I connected both the event and the focal loudspeakers to a Mackie Big Knob, so you can directly compare the sound of the speakers. If you set both loudspeaker pairs to the same volume and then switch between the speakers, the differences are striking. Instruments, which are rather flat in the event, pull themselves together to the focals to clearly locatable points, and in between the space, the music becomes almost three-dimensional. It acts as if an image is being focused. Thus, a defective-eyed person must feel when he puts on his glasses.

The Focals go down to about 40 Hz, the Focals can also be subjectively rated (the technical details confirm this ...), the bass sounds in comparison to But the events are rounder, less pappy. The depths (= Mulm) can be judged very well, the resolution in the mids and highs is excellent.

The Beryllium tweeters are controversial and I can understand that.
Fiese distorted guitars sound loud and distorted on the loudspeakers. At higher volume and / or if one sits close to the loudspeakers, this can be a long time tiring. There are people, the tweeters of the Focal Twins are too harsh. The Focals' ability to crystallize the characteristic siren of a violin strings in classical music can be a bit too much for other audio materials.

In the end, the tweeters are taste, it depends on the preferred music style and it is advisable not to sit too close to the loudspeakers. You can adjust the treble and bass by using two potentiators on the back.

Overall, I can recommend the Focal Twin, the processing is high quality, the finish looks noble, the sound is balanced and very detailed. I have been able to adjust the speakers relatively quickly on the loudspeakers and I do not need to listen to other systems.

what sound!

jideke, 17.05.2011
Amateur of big bass and strident highs abstain.
But for those looking to forget their speakers, this is the model you need. All is finesse, softness and precision. This does not mean that they have no power, on the contrary, but it really feels like having a sound source in front of it and not a loudspeaker membrane.
The acoustic plugs take on relief, but it is not the same as the phase difference or the sudden movement of the "perched" sound, because they will not forgive you anything.
But is not that what we are looking for.
To advise lovers of acoustic, instrumental and natural sound, in short for a pure sound without flourish.
To listen absolutely over and over again.
