Easy to install, easy to use, sounds great

30.08.2015
I got this pickup because I needed something that was less prone to feedback problems than the mic I previously used for my banjo. I was looking for something that would be easy to use but with good sound reproduction.

It's easy to install, I just followed the instructions and the recommended placement has sounded the best on my banjo when I've experimented with different placements.

It's easy to use, just plug it straight into the DI box (wich, in my opinion, you will need) via a standard 1/4 inch cable. I have gigged with it many times and have never gotten close to feedback.

It sounds great, it reproduces the characteristic banjo sound quite well and the trade off in sound quality compared to a mic is very small.

Extremely pr sent and clear, hum and low noise

Wernie, 15.07.2015
I have been playing banjo with pickups for many years. Although the banjo is loud enough in most acoustic bands, a pickup can make the sound fuller and softer.

I do not like to work with microphones in the banjo resonator, because first you have to turn the phase 180 degrees, if you take off the hair from the back, and secondly, the high sound level at the moment of the attack mainly causes smaller condenser microphones to clipping, which then sounds hard.

In the studio, of course, nothing about a good microphone, s.besten a dynamic such as Sennheiser MD441U at some distance from the fur. Condenser microphones are rather unsuitable, they sound too present and too hard.

The fishman humbucker Rare Earth sounds that similar: Extremely present and clear, hum and low noise, but with a murderously hard attack. Sure, you can do that with EQ, but what if it's easier and cheaper to do it differently?

I prefer a rather soft guitar-like banjo sound. For this I use a 1 cm wide B-band pickup under the bridge. You can also attach a low priced magnetic guitar pickup with double-sided tape near the neck transition under the coat. You do not need a preamp in both cases.

If you are looking for a glass-hard sound, you may want to buy the (unfortunately quite overpriced) Fishman humbucker, otherwise I recommend the cheaper passive single-coil version of Fishman or one of the mentioned alternatives.
