New Fender Mustang - my review after two weeks

boch, 04.06.2017
The new generation of Fender Mustang was introduced in 2017 and replaces Fender Mustang v2 (I, II, III and IV). The new amplifier has modeling circuit that provides 21 amp models (more than the previous generation) and a bundle of many popular effects currently available on the market.

The interface is very user friendly, split into the three sections: preset selection, signal chain and the amp/effects settings. Four buttons and the sensitive pot are enough to navigate through the rich base of presets.

Native Fender presets are mostly very good. Clean channel emulation is excellent. However, higher gain amps (like Super Sonic) and non-branded amps that emulate popular brands (like Marshall, Orange, etc.) are of hi-fi quality, which means that they don't retain the natural tone of overdrive in the tube amps. The same situation occurs with pedal usage. After connecting an overdrive or distortion pedal to the clean channel, the results is a tone that is quite digital in nature.

In-built effects work much better than the external pedal, so the amp shouldn't be considered a pedal platform like competing brads (e.g. Boss).

As for connectivity, the amp provides a very easy firmware update via WiFi. Future firmware updates will hopefully improve the high gain tones.

New fender Tone app provides a very easy way to download new presets which are of quite high quality. Also, most of the signal chain settings can be modified from the app level. I personally find it easier to do it from the amp interface, which is excellent.

There may be some problems with Bluetooth connectivity, so firmware update on the amp is recommended prior to connecting with the app.

The speaker is not full-spectrum, but one must remember that due to the huge amount of amps, cabinets and effects it must do hard work to properly channel tonal properties of each of the selected signal chains.

I can recommend this amp for home practice and jamming on the clean channel. However, getting quality tone with lots of pedals may be a challenge. There are tons of options within the amp, experimenting with amp/cabinet combinations are highly recommended.

Expectations

Uwe aus K., 20.05.2017
There is finally the amp, on which the guitarist had to wait so long. Wifi, Bluetooth, lightweight, tons of amps and effects. Fender has finally listened to the guitarists and gave them "the amp" that makes them happy.
When unpacking, I first had to open the windows and the flowers, a plastic stench sought for body and life.
So, then times the Amp angewerfen and the latest firmware, which all worked very well over Wifi.
Great, guitar plugged and ... er, nothing? The amp rushes, but no sound is lost in the meanwhile smelly room. Amp off and on again. Aha, now he has the guitarist heart beat faster (which due to lack of good air in the room eh already pumped like crazy). The clean sounds sounded okay, but not like 100e Youtube videos suggested, great. Over headphones it was already a corner better. The simulations of the higher-gain amps sound, as I say, hidlich, dumpf. This can be counteracted by tweakt, hm, again tweakt and again.
Somewhat frustrated by the sound I tried the Bluetooth connection with my Android phone. Aha, works quite okay, but why do the presets do not match those on the amp? Okay, amp off and on again. No sound, only a sea noise tried to lift the mood in my now inanimate stinkery. My wife sprayed a half deodose tangent into the 4 walls, which led to a short snap, but better air.
Amp off and on again. Aha goes again, but on the mobile phone the presets run through and jump in the order back and forth. Meanwhile, I get a connection to the amp, but the app does not respond. So, even that does not work.
Since I live in a rented apartment, I could not play loudly. I brought this up in the Proberaum and what can I say. The amp did not go through, especially the distorted sounds went completely under. The speaker sounds loud not synonymous particularly, somehow topfig, no idea.
Conclusion: The amp goes back. It seems to me Fender has thrown the amp on the market too early. Maybe firmware updates will bring improvement, but I have enough of the stinker.
