Fender Derby Perfection

Sherdy, 27.11.2014
This guitar is fantastic. Sounds great for so many different styles of playing, so sturdy and solid. Love the tele headstock. The actual resonator plate is of great quality. The machine heads are fantastic, guitar is good for tuning. Very wide and short neck. It's easy to play and very light. I love the laminated finish and the dark grain stands out in the wood. Beautiful guitar, bang for buck. Highly recommended!

My first (and no longer long) Reso :-)

Herr Krause, 08.01.2015
For the Slidespielen in Open-G-Tuning I wanted to make nails with heads and searched (and found!) A good resonator. Because I do a lot of music and have good and beautiful instruments, but have little money, the selection was not so great. Crucial for the purchase of the Fender was my pronounced affection for the Telecaster, and the Brown Derby has a Tele-Kopfplatte. In any case, I have not compared any instruments in the store and have not tested anything, but guided me by aesthetic features. And that was just right in this case. In fact, the Brown Derby looks phenomenal despite, or perhaps just because of its optical simplicity, also in detail. The wood is excellent, which also applies to the entire processing. Here, the Indonesian Fender builders have delivered a flawless piece of jewelery, which in terms of sound and technology, what the look promises, in seemingly loving work and successful pursuit of perfection. I am not saying this as an uninformed amateur, but at the very least constructing my electric guitars completely - and I have the highest demands on myself, especially with the surface processing. The Brown Derby is perfectly worked and well adjusted. Dusting in the lacquer, discoloring grip boards, sharp cuff bars, carelessly polished saddles, little dings and dongs, or an unclean intonation may be the case with other inexpensive (and even more expensive!) Guitars. Not here. For processing, which also applies to the quality of the materials used, the verdict can only be: full score!

The sound is missing the direct comparison to other resonator guitars, but the Brown Derby sounds exactly as I imagined it and also from other guitarists know. No, actually the Brown Derby sounds even better, as well as expected it delivers incredible sustain and a volume that fills smaller spaces full. The sound diversity depending on the playing technique is fabulous and superior to any "normal" Western guitar, which is anything but the full score for the sound would not be a fair review.

The Brown Derby is like a normal Western guitar with regard to the strings, so it is only suitable for slides without small modifications. Originally, I wanted to play them exclusively in Open G (and D) with Bottleneck, so I would have needed a permanently higher and straight string position, which would have been quickly and easily accomplished with a new straight saddle and a piece of underlined wood.
In the meantime, I have decided differently from the saddle down a half millimeter and thus achieved a perfect string position and fantastic playability. The saddle can be grinded slightly deeper without any rattling. Now I leave this up and save on a finished Squareneck for Slide. Were differently planned, but the Brown Derby in a Squareneck umzubteln would be a small sin! :-) The factory-mounted saddle is otherwise very good and also very well worked - only one idea too high.

The mechanics are the only thing that might be a bit better. They are by no means bad because they can be used emotionally and keep the mood. Furthermore, the wings fit perfectly to the overall optics. My criticism, which is not really one, is based on the fact that I am accustomed to Schaller, Kluson and Sperzel and generally prefer locking mechanisms. I will not replace them here. There is also no reason to re-guitar this guitar. The works are completely in order and must go down only when they are down.

One could complain that the Brown Derby has no pickup. Thanks. She does not need one. You can use it with a microphone, which sounds better than the best customer. If it is absolutely necessary, the retrofit installation should be no problem. This costs at most a hundred and is done after one day. However, I am convinced that the microvariant is the better alternative in every respect. In small rooms the Reso does not have to be amplified anyway, it is sufficiently loud and enforceable.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the Brown Derby and in hindsight even very glad not to have taken anything more expensive.

If you want an excellent Reso to the fair course, you can access here without hesitation. Other great names also make their models in the one-hundred-fiftieuro segment also in the Far East produce, that should not deter you. For ne real "Made in USA" -Reso you always have to accept a four-digit number on the price tag, since you can not make anything.
