Excellent sounding monitors with quality problems

Greenthumb, 03.09.2013
After having used Event Opals for a year I really can't critique their sound. I can make music and mix without a sub which was the main reason choosing Opals. There is no ear fatique when using moderate volumes. The sound is tangible with these speakers and they translate well. These speakers sound big and the room must be treated to enjoy them fully. Their characteristics suit my music the best in this price category. You can crank up the volume until your head blows, but they will still sound right.

The bad part comes from quality problems and support. One of my units had a defect with insulation: There was an audible radio station back noise which couldn't be controlled. It made those quiet times in studio work a pain. How can you concentrate on your work when you can hear a radio station in the background? Even muting the speakers or unplugging input signal didn't help.

At first I could tolerate the insulation problem since there is 2 year warranty. But then comes the worst part: I contacted Event support in January. They started arranging pickup and then suddenly there was no response. In February I contacted Thomann after having my speakers packed in studio corner for a month. They arranged the pickup and repairs. But repair wasn't possible and they told me that I could get either my money back or new units in September! Which is now so I have waited for EIGHT MONTHS for replacement! Now they are finally being shipped and hopefully there are no problems with the new ones.

This may sound unreal, but it's a true story. I've gone thru a pretty bad phase during last spring trying to get replacements while my studio was out of order. I guess Event has major quality problems with Opals and a lot of returns. If you choose these speakers, I hope you will get good ones right from the start.

I considered other brands and models to fit my needs, but in the end I just wanted Opals. I know I may get lackluster support again in case of problems, but after having found the right monitors I will take the risk. Having audited Focal Twins and Genelec 8040s there is just no competition for my needs.

Insane speakers!

06.09.2014
These are just completely mind-blowingly good, completely living up to the hype, which appears to be very well deserved. Crystal clear and dynamic highs, really tight and punchy lows and mids that really "paint" out the timber in the music in a beautiful way, all while remaining incredibly balanced and easy to listen to. No ear fatigue or harsh/brittle sounds, just hours and hours of pure music enjoyment. Perfect for mixing as they are very honest.

For the price, these are a no-brainer, you absolutely can't go wrong with them. Build quality is also really good - all metal cabinet makes it feel like you can use them to demolish a building if you wanted to. :)
