Despite workmanship - great bass

Basser9420, 07.04.2010
I play this bass for almost 2 years, at that time it cost the 950EUR.

Rating:

negative:
- glue tracks near the saddle, on the fretboard and on the side of the saddle (but can also be that only with my model has gone wrong)
- "eiernde Potis" ... a mail to Thomann and my artfully gifted brother could reduce the problem
- when assembling the frets (I mean not the Bundreinheit !!!) clearly effort has been saved
- EQ rushes easily when the Treeble-Potis is turned up (but also occurs with other more expensive bass)
- the grooves in the saddle, for the sides are partially unsatisfactory

positive:
- EMG's deliver great sound for hard rock and metal
- with the appropriate pickup and use of the 3-band EQ, however, FAST is able to create a suitable sound for every musical direction
- good bundle purity
- great tuning stability of the tuners
- long battery life
- great sound
- optically absolute eye-catcher

Conclusion: The bass has PURE OPTIC processing guns. Since I find something like this at the then price of 950EUR unsuited, I would have let the Bass back to Thomman, I would have had my current knowledge of basses.
Nevertheless: I do not regret the purchase of the bass, because it has a real class sound and super hardware elements !!!! A real workhorse for all hardrock / metal bassists and you will be noticed on the stage with the optics guaranteed! Today's price I find more appropriate.
You get a great bass and I can really recommend it if you can look over small purely optical processing.

Not worth his money

26.07.2015
The body shape of the ESP Ltd F series has been very successful for a long time: on the one hand it acts aggressively, on the other hand it resumes the form of classical stringed instruments.
After the hefty price increase for the ESP Ltd basses in the range of 30-50% this spring and the bad experience I've made with another bass (B-206SM) from this manufacturer, I've been hesitant with buying a while But now moved to the order by the price of 100.- EUR.

But the unpleasantness is already beginning with the unpacking: The original packaging is no better piece than a cheap Harley Benton instrument, which does not always fit the price. In addition, the packaging was opened, which could have caused damage during transportation. But the bass came without damage.
The back of the headboard says "Made in China" and the serial number starts at 15. So the production country seems to change again and again, since I have already seen photos of headboards from previous years with Made in Vietnam and Indonesia Times).
What is also different depending on the year is the position of the body wings relative to the neck: In my example, the upper belt pin sits at the level of the 13th fret and the bridge accordingly further away from the body end, while the bass on the ESP side shows the Pin at height 12. The collar is seated and the bridge is thus closer to the body end.

On closer inspection (the "flamed Maple" ceiling is only visible when the lighting is appropriate), it is clear that the supposed ceiling is not massive and is probably not even a veneer, but a decorative film (as is the case with the B-20xSM series) ). This is for the price of course not appropriate, especially since the more favorable F-5E has a massive ceiling.
The fingerboard has an even grain, here it is only apparent that it is lacquered, which would be rather unusual for a rosewood handleboard. The collar is perfect.
The width of the handle is pleasantly slim (45mm at the saddle, 69mm at the 24th waistband). However, the thickness of the neck falls rather under the heading "halved tree trunk": 21.5mm at the 1st fret; 23.8mm at the 12th fret. As ESP can describe as "ultra-thin", I am really veilful.
The neck profile is a mixture of C and D (ESP calls it U) and despite the thickness, the playability for my medium-sized hands is still halfway OK.
The distance between the strings at the bridge is 17mm, which is at least a good value for my taste.

To the setup: with the Spannstab someone had meant too well; After the vote, it rattled first in all positions. A glance at the cervical neck showed that the neck was bent backwards. After this has been fixed, the setting, including the octave unit, fits very well. Only the saddle could surely be even deeper.

The overall picture of the processing looks good at first sight. But unfortunately only at first sight. On the second, it is noticeable that the volume and balance potentiometers have a different hue than the rest of the hardware (bluish instead of black nickel). The potentiometers are also not properly mounted (or simply have the wrong diameter for the potentiometer axis) and therefore a bit. The Potis themselves feel quite cheap when pressed, and above all the balance pot is around the middle position very hakelig. The pickups are surprisingly tipping; Here was probably saved on the foam / moss rubber.
The coronation shows a non-uniform distance between the bridge and the bridge PU and also an offset from the center. So either the PU or the bridge sits obliquely. After measuring against the end of the handleboard actually the bridge seems to be crooked.
To the rear of the body still remains to be noted that a bolted battery compartment cover (at least with turning nuts) is no longer state of the art.
Oh, the weight should also be of interest: 4.36 kg, so no light weight, but still bearable.

So, now to the really crucial question: How does the thing sound? Unfortunately, the bass for my taste can not score so synonymous. To match the body design, it delivers a wonderfully powerful, low-pitched "growl", as expected from mahogany, but further, slightly higher mid-frequency frequencies mean that the definition is lost and there is a tendency to drone. This can be countered partly by lowering the center on the bordeigen sound control, however, I also expect with a bass with active electronics that the sound in neutral position is already usable.
In addition, the sound character is also somewhat dull and "mumpy" therefore, which I would not have expected because of the EMG-PUs and electronics. This sound characteristic is sometimes called mahogany, but so far I have not experienced it with any bass with a mahogany body. This is of course not the case for the wood quality of ESP Ltd. The height regulator is only very discreet, since its application frequency is obviously too high.
The pickup balance does not have a decisive influence on the basic characteristic described, so that the bass can not offer a great variety of sound. The Ibanez SR-50x series offers the same "Mahogany-Knurr" with a much more effective sound control (and for a bit more than half the price of the F-415), but with one Very unspectacular (not to say boring) corpus form. By the way, in comparison, the 35 "scale of the F-415 does not provide a decisive advantage in the H-string.

Conclusion:
The ESP Ltd F415FM has so many weaknesses (not to mention the processing shortcomings) that he is not worth his money. Even the old price of the beginning of the year with 829.-? I would consider as too high, EMGs to or fro.
Therefore: Not recommended.

PS: The trigger with the features is because of the pre-made maple top and the bolted battery cover.
