Ultra-short scale bass
veggieman, 22.08.2020
This is a good choice for me as I have small hands.
It's very light and easy to play.

The neck profile is very comfortable. I would call it medium-thin.
The fret ends are nicely polished with no sharp edges.

Overall I'm pleased and will probably keep it.

The down side:

The finish isn't great. The back of the neck is a bit rough in a few places and the body has a visible knot in the wood below the paint.

The pickup has reasonable sound for the price. It's not very loud, but this is my first Precision-type pickup so I'm not sure what's normal.

The factory strings are flabby so I've tuned it up to F# to get good tension. I plan to get heavier strings to compensate.

Because the body is so small, the neck falls when playing on a strap. But because it's so light overall, the weight of the neck isn't a big problem. It's not as neck-heavy as some other basses.

Mine did not come with a gig bag, so I guess that's no longer standard. The recommended Gator XL case is much too large. Gator's Les Paul case is a pretty good fit if you put a folded towel under the body.

It's actually smaller than you think...
15.02.2017
IN SUMMARY - it's very small, light, and plays well. Change the strings and it's a great little bass.

Features: 4/5 - it doesn't have all that much, but what it has is good. The gig bag was a nice addition but I'd use a sturdier one.

Sound: 3/5 - perfectly serviceable, but I recommend a quick set-up to change from the out-the-box configuration. Might be a 4 if it came with different strings.

Quality: 5/5 - seems well put-together, feels very nice to play, is very small/light.

I bought this looking for a short-scale bass, and I did read the dimensions, so I knew it would be small: but this thing is REALLY small - I can actually fit it into a case for a short-scale guitar. I guess that part was a pleasant surprise; but I'm a small person (5'6" and very scrawny) and it almost looks too small for me, so if you have an imposing physique or you're just a big person this bass will look funny/comical on you.

Because it's so small, it can be difficult to find comfortable positions to slap/pop, and it takes a bit of getting used to. There's not much room to maneuver if you like to move about.

Having said that, it plays really nicely. Neck feels really thin - if you play with your thumb over you can actually probably use the A string reliably and without too much difficulty. Strings might feel quite close together for some but I like them compact - again, it's really small. It's balanced well and I've not noticed any neck dive at all, although I do have a pretty good strap for that.

The strings it comes with are round-wound and the action is fairly low, which can lead to things being quite buzzy sometimes if you're not careful, although with some set-up it should sound nice. I gather some players actually like a tiny bit of a buzz, so maybe you won't need to change it. Funnily enough, the pickups don't really respond at all to the buzz, so it's not a problem plugged in.

It sounds pretty good - there's not much in the way of variety with the one tone knob, but it gets the job done. The mids and highs don't seem over-exaggerated as the knob is turned up but it does sound a little brighter - with the tone knob set to 0 it's quite mellow. I always run it through a bunch of effects, but I didn't feel like my dry signal was lacking anything or stilted in any way. If I had to criticize I'd say maybe the low-end felt a bit thin sometimes, but the whole tone of the instrument is generally fairly well-rounded.

The gig bag is perfectly acceptable for keeping it clean, but it's one of those thinly-padded ones, so perhaps not the best choice for actual gigging. The zips strike me as the kind that might snap off if you were packing in a hurry, too - but if you're just taking it to rehearsals or something it might be alright.

I think I'd recommend it, but be warned that it's probably slightly smaller than you imagine it is. If you just want something tiny to practice on or travel with, it's certainly very light.

Some additional rough measurements to help you out:
Top of head - bottom of body: 39"/99cm
Depth of the body (thickest): 1.5"/3.9cm

Déçu.
Yann18, 14.10.2020
